Bald Eagles 2014 - Final Update

Post by Jim O'Bryan »

This afternoon I had the opportunity to spend some time down in the Emerald Canyon,
it was snowing pretty hard and I had never tried photographing or even seeing what the
stars of the Emerald Canyon do a winter day in the snow.

This is what I walked away with...

By the time I got back by the eagles the sun had set, and the wet snow had picked up. I
took these from about 300 yards away.

The ustream page for Decorah Eagles has live video from a Bald Eagle nest from Decorah, Iowa. Here is the link.

Importantly, the page mentions "Nest Etiquette". Anyone observing our local eagles should heed this good advice.

For those of you visiting nests, here is a Nest Etiquette compendium. This is not intended to be an absolutely complete listing. Bald eagles can be very sensitive to human behavior, and what may seem innocuous to a human may disturb an eagle; humans are still the biggest threat to eagles. Remember, bald eagles are protected by Federal law in the Bald and Golden Eagle Protection Act and the Migratory Bird Protection Treaty.

1. Respect the landowners. Don't trespass or intrude on them in any way. If there are No Trespassing signs, heed them.
2. Federal law requires you to stay at least 330 feet away from any nest. This distance is also true for individual eagles who may be perched on a tree or standing on the ground.
3. Be as quiet as possible. Don't honk, play loud music, shout or make any other loud noises.
4. If you see an eagle, consider yourself lucky. Don't do anything that might stress the bird. They will see you. Move slowly and carefully and keep your gestures restrained.
5. Do not feed the eagles in any way. This includes leaving food on the ground. These birds are wild animals and should not become dependent on humans.
6. Keep the area free from litter. Pick up after yourself and take your trash with you.
7. If an eagle is on the ground, do not approach it. Also, when it flies away, do not attempt to follow it.
8. Stay aware of your surroundings. If the eagle is near a road, check for traffic before moving. Your safety is important.
9. Take your binoculars and/or camera with you whenever visiting a nest. That equipment will afford you the best view.
10. If others are watching with you, demonstrate eagle friendly actions by your own behavior. Be courteous to both the humans and wildlife.

Don't tell me this town ain't got no heart.

Everyone thought the egg(s) would start to hatch today, but it would appear they are busy with house keeping
but not real busy feeding anything.

Rumors of at least one egg hatching got me stopping by the Emerald Canyon Eagles' nest. They seem to spend
time out of the nest more than before but only for seconds at a time.

The roadway through the Metropark is becoming a total disaster. Especially up here where we are. It’s now quite difficult to bicycle on, unlike say five years ago. Too much surface roughness especially near the perimeter of the roadway. And biking on the “bike path” (actually really the “all-purpose trail”) is not possible unless you are a little kid. Too many dog leashes and hand-holders. Which is OK, just don’t assert that bikes can share it.

It’s more important to the folks that run the Metropark that their salaries and retirement benefits be maintained. Especially if you are one of them. Those of us who would like a decent Park roadway, not so much….

Jim I LOVE the pictures. But to be honest I would rather have smooth roadways than eagles in an inner-ring suburb. . The eagles can populate in places that are more suited than inner-ring suburbs. If you want eagles move to Wooster County or Missouri, or at least not expect them in Lakewood or any urban setting. Give me a smooth place too pedal. Please….

When I see the Metropark roadway resurfaced I will begin to believe that perhaps it's not al about them. But I don't expect that anytime soon. Metropark employee pensions are more important....

Tim....

Spend a little time over a cup of coffee or tea watching the Emerald Canyon Bald Eagles feeding their young, and switching
on and off the nest.

I wonder if Sens Vitter and Alexander are as adamant against drilling in ANWAR to protect 4 legged creatures or are they only against anything that threatens Big Oil's profits.

To my friends the Bills(s)

As I have said every time you post this to a video of Bald Eagles. I am not a huge fan of wind farms, the technology is more than
5-10 years away at best. And the Bald Eagle has been taken off the endangered species list. Though they do fall under the
"Rapture Act" which only allows "The proud ancestors of the Anasazi" (let's be honest they didn't refer to themselves as Native
Americans) are the only ones legally allowed to hunt them or posses their feathers.

ANWAR, I had the pleasure of working for over a decade with BP America, 5 years in exploration. By the time they can
drill in ANWAR they will have it dry from side drilling it.

Now I don't know much about the oil business or financial futures, but common sense would tell us to cap every well in
America, and buy as much overseas oil as possible. Oil is a finite commodity, the one with the most left IN THE END WINS.
Not the one that got rid of it fastest for the cheapest amount. You want to pass something on to your kids (I have none)
give them trillions from selling off our oil in 40 yearw, when it is $10,000 a barrel. If they do
it right they could pay off the debt we ran up.

But back to eagles, Bald Eagles, that live in Emerald Canyon.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww look.
