Bill, I wondered about the same thing Grace is wondering. The Deck is a pretty good place to discuss things going on in the schools.

I went to your link re "Lexile numbers." This idea is one of the worst I've ever heard of. My son's Lexile number is too high. He's not allowed to read, "War and Peace," or Dostoevsky, because according to the Lexile rating, they are too EASY for him.

The Lexile evaluation is about how difficult the vocabulary words are and how long the sentences are. It has NOTHING ABOUT WHAT THE SENTENCES MEAN.

So far, our lit teachers are being able to dance around it, it is so incredibly stupid. As far as I have seen, our teachers are on top of it but they shouldn't be having to deal with it. It makes one want to dismiss organized education altogether and that might be a good idea if we didn't all make such a big investment in it.

But I will private message you. And Grace, I might private message you. And then maybe we can all come back here and spill the beans. If we can't I will come back and leave a cryptic message. I have to go to another thread and post a non-cryptic message.

No, Betsy asked what Save Our Schools was and you directed her to private message. Betsy didn't mention wanting to discuss the schools in private with you. She wanted to simply know what SOS was, but you couldn't make a straightforward response, you had to be all secretive. That lets me know YOU are not comfortable talking about the aims of the group.

I know that you have studied the Lakewood teachers' contracts. I'm trying to get some context here. I don't know about this subject overall: contracts, teachers unions, or how they work. I love our teachers, I know that. I know that our teachers aren't the same as the union that represents them, and that there are times the teachers probably disagree with their own union, as is the case in any union, but it is they system we have so I would like to understand it better.

Here's my question: Is the contract that our Lakewood City Schools' teachers have unusual when compared to other school districts?

How does it compare to say Rocky River, Fairview Park or Cleveland?
