I'm glad you asked! Send a private message if you would like more information.

Is it a crime to read above your texile level?

Why tell her in a private message? Is it a secret?

If you are too embarrassed to state what the SOS is and what it seeks to do, then perhaps we should be very wary of its aims?

Hi Bill and Grace,

Bill, I wondered about the same thing Grace is wondering. The Deck is a pretty good place to discuss things going on in the schools.

I went to your link re "Lexile numbers." This idea is one of the worst I've ever heard of. My son's Lexile number is too high. He's not allowed to read, "War and Peace," or Dostoevsky, because according to the Lexile rating, they are too EASY for him.

The Lexile evaluation is about how difficult the vocabulary words are and how long the sentences are. It has NOTHING ABOUT WHAT THE SENTENCES MEAN.

So far, our lit teachers are being able to dance around it, it is so incredibly stupid. As far as I have seen, our teachers are on top of it but they shouldn't be having to deal with it. It makes one want to dismiss organized education altogether and that might be a good idea if we didn't all make such a big investment in it.

But I will private message you. And Grace, I might private message you. And then maybe we can all come back here and spill the beans. If we can't I will come back and leave a cryptic message. I have to go to another thread and post a non-cryptic message.

Some people are more comfortable discusing their experiences with the schools in private. The private message offers them the opportunity to do so. I have no problem with asking my questions in public such as:

If the tax increase passes will Lakewood Schools be offering another $5 million in retirement bonuses?

No, Betsy asked what Save Our Schools was and you directed her to private message. Betsy didn't mention wanting to discuss the schools in private with you. She wanted to simply know what SOS was, but you couldn't make a straightforward response, you had to be all secretive. That lets me know YOU are not comfortable talking about the aims of the group.

I have to agree with Bill here. SOS, Save our Schools, here http://saveourschoolsmarch.org/, really does seem to have the pulse of what is wrong with education policy today. I think their guiding principles are pretty solid. I'm glad to see you support their cause Bill.

Well who would even know what principles Bill supports when he can't be bothered to tell anyone. If the cause is so important to him, then why can't he stand up and say what the committee seeks to do?

Lisa

That link you provided was NOT provided by Bill Call. Is that the cause he supports or not? How do you know it is? Bill refuses to say,

Hmmmmm. I retired from the Lakewood City School system two years ago and never received a retirement bonus or incentive. Guess my $5 million check must still be in the mail.

Here is the State audit report:

http://www.auditor.state.oh.us/auditsea ... yahoga.pdf

The bonus was available to those who were 50 years old or older and agreed to retire by 2006. Those who accepted the offer also received payment for all unused sick time and 60% of their final salary as an additional bonus. Sorry you missed out.

What exactly is a "pick-up" and how does it work?

The actual bonus total was over $5 million.

Hi Bill,

I know that you have studied the Lakewood teachers' contracts. I'm trying to get some context here. I don't know about this subject overall: contracts, teachers unions, or how they work. I love our teachers, I know that. I know that our teachers aren't the same as the union that represents them, and that there are times the teachers probably disagree with their own union, as is the case in any union, but it is they system we have so I would like to understand it better.

Here's my question: Is the contract that our Lakewood City Schools' teachers have unusual when compared to other school districts?

How does it compare to say Rocky River, Fairview Park or Cleveland?

Thank you. I think as we get closer to a levy, and educated population is necessary.
