I think comparing Dewey's to Angelo's is the old apples to oranges discussion. There's a fundamental difference in styles.
I enjoy Dewey's and I enjoy Angelo's and I'm lucky enough to live in a place where, if I want pizza or focaccia or whatever, I have a choice. I also adore Player's build your own.
I'm happy Dewey's came to town and wish them nothing but success. They join a number of restaurants that offer Lakewood a superior product.
Good for them. Good for us.

Dewey's is better than Valentino's, but that's not too hard ... I think Valentino's has been going downhill. It used to be much better years ago, but lately it's been really bland.
As for Chicago-style, I still say that Danny Boy's Chicago Style pizza is far better than the ones I've had in Chicago at Giordano's, Lou Malnati's, and Pizzeria Uno. Those all looked impressive, but just didn't have the depth of flavor and wonderful crust that Danny Boy's has.
As for New York pizza, a colleague out in Avon Lake said that there's some place out in Westlake on Center Ridge Road that serves pretty darn good New York style pizza, though the name escapes me.

Great post and point! And after eating at both, it is for sure comparing apples and oranges. While each will have their own taste, and Angelo's fans may stick soley with them, Dewey's will have a fan base following for other reasons than even crust or sauce. To be honest, the crust and sauce was irrelevant for me next to the fresh organic ingredients that you just can't get at other pizza places. In fact, the salads will bring me back as much as the pizza. But yes, good for us that they chose Lakewood, and yes there is a place for every business in Lakewood.dl meckes wrote:I think comparing Dewey's to Angelo's is the old apples to oranges discussion. To be honest, as a family of five when our budget is tight and we are at a loss for dinner, we sometimes run up to get the "hot and ready" pizza for $5 with no wait. For our kids' bithday party we ordered from Pizza Pan because when you are serving 50, the buy one get two free half sheets (total $20) can't be matched and are surely good enough for the kids-no complaints. Dewey's is the experience of an incredibly nice dining area with organic ingredients, friendly and competent staff, and desserts from the next door bakery and a Tremont bakery; Angelo's is a staple in Lakewood with formerly the only sit down pizza restaurant and high quality pizza.
I love that new businesses are opening weekly in Lakewood, as evidenced by driving up Madison and down Detroit. Doing everything we can by patronizing as many as we can is the only way to keep the storefronts open and filled.
There are four hair salons that are a part of MAMA because they all serve different needs. Caroly Lynn's salon, the newest, specializes in ethnic styles and received one of the first grants from Lakewood-my friend raves about her. Carabel's is a staple of Lakewood specializing in the "mature" women's hair, as well as young girls' parties, pedicures/manicures, and evey product you can imagine. Omega's Christin in her unassuming shop gives thorough cuts to all ages (my daughter went from long hair to a short chic hair cut by Christina with no tears), and Cuttin Loose is another neighborhood local owned salon (wife of owner of Lakewood Hardware) who volunteered her time and her employees' time to do all the hair for the LHS eighties play!!!!!! She gave my son a mullet for it and he raved on and on about their hospitality and warmth!
My point, there is a place for everyone in Lakewood, and pizza, like haircuts, is something we all need on a regular basis!

We ordered Dewey's pizza last night to take to the valley and eat. We ordered the South Western BBQ Chicken pizza and a cheese pizza. It was ready on time and the staff was very professional. The dining area looks really cool and it appears to have a large draft beer selection, I will have go back to try that since they wouldnt give me a to go cup.
Great food, everyone needs to try it.
BTW - there is extra parking in the back.

Good food!
We had a large pizza... half was a pepperoni for the kids, and the other half was their Billy Goat. Very good. Big pizza. My husband and I also split a full sized Candied Walnut Field Greens salad and it was excellent. Top it off with two Oregon Microbrews and it was perfect.
The wait staff was a little too overzealous...alway pacing (overstaffed on opening week and a Tuesday night) but it is better than the alternative, you know? I would highly recommend. Great pizza.. love the crust.
