As I told the owner...

Could easily be one of the top three pizzas in Lakewood.

They serve it all the time at Heights Observer meetings. Better than most, but might not crack into Angelos.

Fun, clean, kid friendly.

They should do well.

I got my free seats booked! I told Nick I would write the story if he got me in but I think they gave some family tickets anyway! I think they will have a different crowd than Angelos and not fair to compare. For those who want organic and different vegetarian choices, like goat's cheese, olive oil, sun dried tomatoes, artichokes, etc., and Amish chicken and free-range meat, and a THIN crust in a brick oven, they could be number one for them.

Is there anyone who has had Dewey's and also had Valentino's (on Murray Hill in Little Italy) to compare the two? My hubby worked at Val's while we were in college and it's his favorite pizza place in Cleveland after growing up in NYC. Would be nice to not have to drive across town for a product he would classify as "real pizza" instead of "pizza-like food products"

I have never been to the other pizza place but Dewey's today was outstanding! The gorgeous surroundings, the pleasant and attentive staff, and one of the best pizza I ever had! I never have had gourmet dessert at a pizza restaurant either! What a gift to Lakewood!

I prefer Mama Santos on Murray Hill, though I still find the "New York Pizza" sadly missing in the county. Ken Warren who is a total NYC Pizza freak, has searched and still brings back pies from New York when he can.

That said, Dewey's is a top class operation and offers a delightfully different pizza experience in Lakewood.

Please note the number for the FREE Pizza was a cell number not the number for Dewey's Pizza. The manager was thankful for the post and overwhelmed with calls and requests, and has asked me to change the number to: 228-2299 this is their business line

My vote for best pizza in Lakewood : Angelos

But if you're looking for the best NY style pizza in the Cleveland area, I recomend Vincenzo's.

With all due respect to Ken Warren, when do we get a good Chicago style pizzaria?

And Jim, since you always seem to have the inside scoop on restaurant activity, if you have any pull and know someone with an open spot, I do know that the city's best sushi place (Sushi 86) is looking for a new home. I'd love to see him move to Lakewood. He could easily fit into the space vacated when Phoenix moves down the line.

You know Angelos has carved out a nice niche, but only after Angie's Closed. Dewey's is a different product, have you had it? While Ken shuddered, I ate 4 pieces.

I think this is where Donatos wins too, unique. Mama Mias claims to have Angies sauce.

I am with you. New York taste great in New York. Ken and Tom Warren made a convert of me. But I really miss true Chicago Deep Dish. My favorite was MiPi on Rush.

The only real scoop is two restaurant looking for space, both would compete against two other restaurants in town, and both would have an unfair advantage.

FWIW

I think it is really odd and sad that a post about a new business in Lakewood, who put tons of money into a LAKEWOOD location when they could have went anywhere on the West side is filled with who is better, them or another pizza place. Shouldn't that be another thread? There are many pizza places who do well in Lakewood for different reasons.

Here we have not just a new business, but a place who opened their doors to FREE food for local people to show them who they are and let them decide if they like them enough to go back.

With all the past threads on businesses closing in Lakewood and the sky falling, I think supporting new businesses for who they are is a nice way to encourage them and keep them. Now if you want to have a pizza cookoff and allow people to vote on their favorite pizza, that is a different thread. And not a bad idea.

Justine

Let me clarify my comment.

I ate 4 large pieces along with a salad. I was full. It was good pizza.

I have always said it was good pizza. In a city of 15 pizza places, "Easily one of the top three is not a dig."

Ken on the other hand, has never seen a pizza out of New York that he liked. Usually he asks to talk to the chef, and begins to tell them where they went wrong with sauce, then crust. For Ken not to like a pizza it just has to be served outside of New York city.

I believe DL had 4 slices as well, but did not see her eat salad. I think she liked it too.

We should mention they have more than pizza to fight about. Salads, sandwiches and more.

Well on that point I agree, best salad I have had. I could be a vegetarian if I could make salads like that. And not being a dessert person, I did taste my husband's and it was unbelievable.

I still think a thread about free pizza for a new business should be about the positives of that new business, and another thread on comparing pizza would seem more appropriate. Just my opinion.

Brilliant pizza. Brilliant operation. Brilliant promotion. The kids were wild about the pizza, and enjoyed watching the chefs toss the pizza and apply the toppings in the open kitchen.

The sauce is a little spicier and not nearly as sweet as fast-food pizza joints. The ingredients are fresh and of good quality. The crust is thin and unadorned by cheese/flavored salt/etc. It's good honest pizza.

The service was friendly and attentive, the atmosphere airy and light. We'll definitely return.
