Skateboarding Lessons at Lakewood Park

Post by Vince Frantz »

Skateboard Lessons are starting again! Last year we had about 23 kids aged 3 to 13 in two skill levels.

This year we have 3 skill levels and added weekday lessons as well as Saturdays.

- Pre-Kickturns (3 - 6 yrs totally new to the skateboard)
- Kick Turns (5 and over and already tried skating but can't Ollie yet)
- Kickflips (7 and over and can Ollie)

Lessons will be 9:00 am - 10:00 am on weekdays or saturdays according to preference and interest.

You can register all summer but we are making the first block of lessons after June 15th.

More information about the lessons and Registration at the Public Square Group website.

Check it out if you have a child interested in skateboarding. Great way to get introduced to the Lakewood Skatepark.

Vince-- You and your crowd rock, kudos to you!

I remember my pals and I hearing about this skateboarding stuff from out in CA. We all went down into our basements and pulled out the steel roller skates that everybody had.
Pulled a skate apart (it was adjustable), got a plank of wood, nailed those skates on and VOILA a skateboard!

Hey--- what's this internet thing they're talking about?

Thanks for the compliments!

Rhonda - We will start the sessions the week of June 21st. A Saturday will most likely be a good time for a big group.

This has been one of the most fun things we have ever done. The ages are generally 4-8 yrs old and the kids have a great time.

I'll do my best to get there during the week if not on Saturday!
Sounds like great fun!

This is marvelous and part of the Lakewood I love.

Thanks Matt!

It's great to see how those two brothers approach things so differently. I have been skating since 1986 but my younger brother started in 1985. He is 20 months younger and we still skate together whenever we can. Nothing like having a buddy to skate with in the same house.

Vince it was nice running into you this morning. And I am so glad that my friend was able to get her boys hooked up with you. It's so funny that she thought there was no way Lakewood would have skateboarding lessons like the did in Chicago only to find that yes we do. And I was so elated to hear that this session of lessons are booked. What a great thing for the youth of Lakewood.

I would like to add that though most of the skaters are young - not all "new" skaters are under 10. We have one new skater who is 32 and just bought a board 3 months ago. He says he has been learning what he could from Youtube but now he wanted more direct help.

He is learning about as fast as the kids but he has a much more analytical approach. He can already Ollie which can take up to a year or so to learn.

His back story is one of weight loss and getting shape. He says he is 75lbs lighter than he was two years ago and learning to skate was also something he always wanted to do but just didn't have anyone to do it with.

Makes me think there are some things I should be trying before I get older as well.
