The WEB SWAT Daschound

Post by Jim O'Bryan »

Many of you might remember when we discovered the SWAT Pigeon, during the
Countant Stand off. Possibly used for getting messages out during a stnd-off
or top secret reconnaissance work.

Well at this year's WEB SWAT 5k, we found another secret weapon of SWAT.

Meet the SWAT Daschund complete with bullet proof vest!

You have to appreciate the out of the box thinking behind using our animals friends
to protect the city from threat.

Also at the 5K this year were...

Stan Austin with Leslie and Gladys Favre.

and many more Lakewoodites, check it out at:

Special thanks to Lakewood Police Patrick Foye, Pat Fiorelli, Gary Easter, Ted Morely,
and Municipal Judge Patrick Carroll for putting this together.

All proceeds go directly to the fund to help the wives and children of fallen officers.

Isn't it time you started your LO Photoblog today?

It was a beautiful morning to come out and support our local law enforcement professionals.

My kids weren't buy the possibility that the Daschound was an undercover police dog. But they've never seen Serpico.

Mr. O'Bryan you not only did a good job capturing the road runners including my son but also some of us innocent spectators.

That is one cute miniature Dachshund. Depending on training, it could well be a bomb sniffer. Dogs have smell sense that is roughly 20,000 times more sensitive than ours.

Weiner dogs are also very brave (or can be). Their ancestors, the full size Dachshund, were bred to flush out badgers from farms in Germany. Badgers are incredibly ferocious, especially backed into their dens underground. Dachshunds short legs, powerful upper body and long snout made them excellent at hunting out the badgers.
