There was no real crime. When a guy is 17 years old, it is awesome to get it on with an attractive teacher. If my memory serves me correctly, that is how Newt Gingrich met his first wife.

That is why...the judge should throw the case out. if not, the jury should throw the case out, and then throw eggs and rotten cabbage at the prosecutors.

I try to respect the ladies by not prosecuting them for victimless "crimes", not sending them to prison for victimless crimes, and not getting them registered as 'sex offenders' for victimless crimes. do you want to put Newt Gingrich's ex-wife in prison?

Now that I am older I realize he did not mean the guys who gave Mortgage Backed Securities triple-A status. as for conventional crime, the president and feds don't have much influence on chastising dumb teenagers and streetards: that is kind of below their scope of purpose.

A 17 year old dude isn't a victim. a 17 year old is willing and able.
The 17 year old in question appears to have been willing and able.
A 17 year old is old enough to enlist in the military. A 17 year old is old enough to drop out of high school and work at a garage.

Wait wait, I remember a teacher of mine getting 3 years in prison and having to register as a level 3 sex offender every 90 days for the rest of his life for having an affair with a student that was 17 at the time, 18 when she testified before court. He was in his late 20's (I want to say 28ish). When the individual is 17, the parents have the right to press charges regardless of whether the 17-year-old consented or not.

I mean, the girl stood in front of the judge in tears, begging the court to drop charges because she fully consented to the relationship. She was 18 by then, and it was no good because her parents pressed charges.

The legal age of consent in Ohio is 16. I believe that gets thrown out the window if the parents decide to press charges.

I remember people being furious at the Lakewood BOE and the school administration when the news broke out. If I remember correctly he was charged with 3 counts of Sexual Battery and another crime as well.

There is more to consider than just the chronological age of the parties.

I believe Ohio law provides that a teacher's having sexual contact with a student is a crime.

Further, I believe Ohio law provides that having sexual contact with a person who is under certain disabilities (generally mental or geriatric) is also a crime. The article cited said the student in this case was in a special education program; read into that what you want.
