I didnt warm to his novels, but read his volumes and volumes of nonfiction. He showed that you could be an extraordinarily gifted artist, and also not be a freak, oddball or an SOB. His kindliness as a reviewer was well known; he was a gracious, friendly, funny, self-deprecating regular fellow. Who happened also to be a towering literary figure.
