I didnt warm to his novels, but read his volumes and volumes of nonfiction. He showed that you could be an extraordinarily gifted artist, and also not be a freak, oddball or an SOB. His kindliness as a reviewer was well known; he was a gracious, friendly, funny, self-deprecating regular fellow. Who happened also to be a towering literary figure.

And this thought:

Our country is waking up to a rather seriously painful hangover from a long, long era of overindulgence, indiscipline, and selfishness. And here at the end of our childish party, arrive in the news two beacons of sober, self-effacing maturity: “Sullyâ€
