Britain to Phase Out Incandescents.

Post by Jim DeVito »

I know that there is a down side with CFL's However I think the toxic waist from CLF's could be contained a little better through quilty recyling programs than the crap being spewed out of the local coal fired power plant.

Perhaps Lakewood could beat CA to the punch.

until there's an alternative for ceiling fans that don't burn out really fast or cause major flicker issues (LED lights do something weird that makes my eyes go NUTS when I'm driving behind a car with LED tail-lights at night, can't imagine they'd be a good option for room lighting but I got a free LED lightbulb on Earth Day at the Zoo), as well as other applications where incandescents are much more long-lasting and affordable, getting rid of incandescents can't happen. We've switched every non-dimmable and non-ceiling fan bulb in our house to CFLs or other alternative bulbs (a few of our lamps are halogens, no other bulb option for the socket, but we don't use them very much). Ceiling fans use less electricity than AC does so it's a trade-off, if we couldn't use the ceiling fans because the vibration would burn the bulbs out too fast, and there weren't incandescents to put in, then the options are: swelter, use the AC and the fan becomes just a light fixture, or the light fixture part of the fan is unused/bulbless so we can use the fan instead of the AC.

Considering that much of CA has significantly hotter weather than we do, this has to be an issue they're facing too.
