Michael Vick is back

Post by Mike Deneen »

Apparently the DA in Virginia is going to file dog fighting charges tomorrow. (what has he been doing for the past six years??)

I have a question for the lawyers:

1. How is this not double jeopardy?
2. If convicted, would he serve stat prison time AFTER any federal prison time, or would the sentences be served concurrently?

Any additional time over his federal sentence might definitely finish his career.

Here's an answer and commentary to your first question and some speculation on the second. From my local paper and includes quotes from two William and Mary law professors:

Vick (aka Ron Mexico) is a local down here. The fights were held across the river from where I live. It sounds to me like the feds didn't consult the local officials or that Vick has incompetent counsel.

Aside from the legal jumbo is a question of Vick's career. In this day and place pro-athletes make enormous amounts of money.

The commentators were talking about if Vick Plea Bargains. If he names names he won't be accepted back by his teammates, even if gets no prison time. Loyalty and camraderie and all that. There goes the massive paychecks. However, not naming names means he is unrepentent, and is protecting other mega-rich bloodsport enthusiasts.
