I f I had to guess, Bill, I think that Rep. Mandel will be announcing his candidacy for the Mayor of Lakewood, his relocation from Lyndhurst, and his plans for the purchase and restoration of a century home in the Clarence area.....

Will he have to move to Lakewood if he is elected? I know there is no residency requirement for other employees.

Interesting query Bill. Just think of the increase in viable candidates who would be interested in being the Mayor if, like other city employees, there were no residency requirement! And why should some city employees be allowed to live wherever they please, and not others? In the same way as there are a great many qualified safety workers, teachers, administrative staff who chose to live in Medina, Avon or Strongsville, I'll bet there are a bunch of highly qualified city administrators who would love to run Lakewood if only they didn't have to move from Solon.

Whenever I see these kind of "exciting", announcements about Lakewood's future, I wonder about the messengers.

Well, I did a little Googling around and ran into this blog called "Solon Democratic Club. The official website for the Solon Democratic Club - serving Solon and Glenwillow, Ohio."

Now, by its very definition, this is a partisan site, but I found the comments about Josh Mandel to be interesting.

It does make me wonder what he and Ryan have in mind for Lakewood's future.

The full text from Monday, October 16, 2006 article titled "Bawk! Bawk! Ba-bawk!" is at the following link.

http://solondemocrats.blogspot.com/2006 ... chive.html

Here is an excerpt.

Solon Democratic Club wrote:Tough questions scare Mandel out of debate

Republican Josh Mandel, who is supported by the same Statehouse insiders who want to see Ken Blackwell elected governor, backed out of a televised debate with Democrat Roger Goudy late last week – just hours after proposed debate questions were made public at a Thursday Solon Cable Commission meeting.

The 17th House District debate was to take place Wednesday on Solon cable television. Among the questions Goudy submitted to the commission for a moderator to ask Mandel:

* You received money from Tom Noe when you were running for Lyndhurst City Council. Isn’t it highly unusual for a city council candidate in Lyndhurst to receive contributions from a coin dealer in Toledo? What is your relationship with Tom Noe?

* Are you voting for Ken Blackwell or Ted Strickland?

* You seem to have a lot of time to campaign for this office. Do you have a job and if so how many hours a week do you actually work at this job?

* What is your position on abortion?

* What is your position on charter schools?

Hours after these and other proposed questions were made public, Mandel backed out of the debate, to which he had committed weeks earlier.

House Democratic Leader Joyce Beatty said today Mandel’s decision to back out raises a whole new set of questions about the Republican, who has accepted $20,000 in campaign contributions from charter school magnate David Brennan and his wife.

Some of these are not even debate questions. Some of them sound very much like attacks. Like he would say who he is voting for, it is protected. What does how many hours he works at a job have to do with anything? Mindless attacks from mindless people. Josh....don't even bother throwing pearls to pigs.

Don't worry Jules, stephen doesn't like Josh because when he was on Lyndhurst City Council he fought to cut taxes.

That man has no place in Lakewood.

Stephen, I'd suggest you come on Saturday and find out. You never know maybe you'll agree with him.

Nah. I think I'll work in the yard. I kind of doubt that they would impress me much. I'll read the recap here, and in the LO paper.

I'd consider going if the two of them could actually get Noe, Brennan, and Blackwell to show up. That would be a spectator sport. It's always fun to hear those that reap so much public money complain about taxes.

Why don't you go? Then you can tell us what day we can stop worrying about the future of Lakewood. It will be a comfort to all of us.

When I want objective information on Republicans, I always head straight for a Democrat rant/blog...and vice versa.

I just noticed that Josh won his election last yr 67% to 33%. Backing out of that ridiculous debate sure must have hurt him. I think the voters there knew more than some of these pessimistic observers do by reading one website and jumping to conclusions.

Mr. Salo

Welcome back. I see a real surge from the right.

Your name has been mentioned for this fall.

Well?

Anything you want to break here?

To me, I'm open to people from any party that can effect true change in Lakewood.

The city is facing some real crises in the future and a plan, no, a vision is needed. Whoever in the end has a plan, a vision, and is able to actually lay that out with facts on how they will accomplish it will have a leg up in my book.

I don't need more annoucements of endorsements (completely useless in my book) or websites attacking what the other guy is doing wrong. I'd like an idea of what the candidate sees as Lakewood's challenges and how they plan to address them with detailed ideas, not spin.

I just hope at some point in this race, that candidate emerges. I don't care what party they're in, they'll have my vote.
