Lakewood Fire Department's Soap Box Derby Car

Post by Jim O'Bryan »

Some of the images from a day at the races with Lakewood Fire Department's Fire Chief Dunphy.

Image
The Cleveland Soap Box Derby Track, we all drive by it on the Shoreway by Whiskey Island.

Image
While the track seems pretty low key, imagine going a quarter mile in a red wagon, made of wood, at 30 mph or faster!

Image
Now imagine doing that at the age of 7! Alissa Case, pull her Stock class car back to the pits.

Finn David, age 7 from Rocky River with his car.

Image
Mom, and FC Tim Dunphy oversee Emma as she works on the LFD car between runs.

Image
The paddock was filled with cars, some from as far away as California.

Image
Emma ready and loaded for another run!

Image
At the end of the run, she beats Victor VanRoy.

Image
Then all the cars are driven back up the hill with drivers and crews.

Niko Janoco, in the Masters Class, You can race Soap Box Derby between the ages of 7 and 20.

Image
Amy and Stephanie Getz.

Image
They can back up the talk!

Image
Most races decided by less than a half of a second!

Laura Smutny gets ready for a run.

Emma ready for another run!
