They Are Back! Emerald Canyon Bald Eagles On Nest!

Post by Jim O'Bryan »

I am pleased to report that the longest lasting nesting area for a bald eagle is back and in use again!

This nest has fallen five times in the last ten years and has been rebuilt each year.

This year looked pretty iffy in February, but some branches seemed to bring it back to good enough to use. It should be remembered, that an average Bald Eagle nest is about 2 tons. And when they come down they come down hard. Which is one of many reasons it is illegal to interact with Bald Eagles or raptors. You cannot touch the tree, the area within 50' and you cannot even pick up a feather from any raptor unless you are a native American.

To my recollection the number of offspring out of this nest is 12 fledglings over the years.

You can often see bald eagles, especially the juveniles without white head in the skies over Lakewood throughout the summer.
