City Art Installation at Sloane & Detroit

So, any opinions on the spiky green cones on Detroit at Sloane?

I haven't seen it in person but from the pictures posted online, it seems a very odd location. In one picture, it completely blocks the view of Blackbird Baking Company, which has a lovely, warm store front. Why don't they put the spikes in front of that eyesore formerly on Cannon now with a West Clifton address? Or in the empty space created on the valley side of Sloane by proposed development that went nowhere?

From a July 21 piece that was posted.

It's a $15,000 project through the Lakewood Planning Department's Public Art Progam.

Lakewood used a $50,000 Community Development Supplemental Grant it received this year from Cuyahoga County.

Reminds me slightly of a Lakewood Is Art project and installation. But without the scientific study behind it.

Thanks for the photos, Jim! It clearly shows the installation from all perspectives.

I agree with Kate that perhaps the same sort of distraction might be better placed in front of failed projects like the nearby Foran Cliffs on Sloane or the West Clifton, FKA Cannon, Taj Mahal.

Looks like a uber-difficult bicycle slalom course!

While I do admit I can see some issues. Snow Plows, people falling into them getting some pretty nasty cuts or worse.

But I do have to give them credit for at least trying to get some community art going. Really we have the two "Davis" in front of Beck, Tranvision by Pieter Diepenbrock in front of Lakewood Library, a street painted and, and, and...

"Art" like beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I was taken back as I watched it happen, Seeing what would happen and pop up. I found it not finished, but still lacking. But then most "public art" is found lacking by many. As I was speaking with an elected official this morning. I asked them "What was going on at Sloane?" They had an hour of answers, but none based on seeing it, or knowing about it. I made them a $20 bet on a fact about the "green trees..." I received a phone and and they told me they were coming back for their $20, and they found the "sailboats" strange, but I lost the bet.

Later in in the day, I was speaking with another member of the City, and they asked my thoughts. I said, "I would like large projects as Lakewood Is Art has laid out in the past." But with some questions it strikes me as OK public art. It had distracted me from my daily grind. Made me think. Made me question it and its very existence. Made me ponder the cost, and who paid. (Not Lakewoodites directly), and what if anything is next and possible. It made me think, and even entertained me for a short period of time. In my life experiences that makes it as OK Public Art.

But those are just my observations, nothing more.

It looks like something is going in on the other corners - there are lines and green paint across both Detroit and Sloane.

The tall spikes make for an interesting conversation as they sit on our border and project an aggressive stance as you enter. Is this lakewood’s own “Border Wall?”

Funny how Trump and Summers are so much alike.

I just got home from running errands, and got to see this in person. My first impression is, that it is disturbing.
Disturbing in the sense, that it is in the street, and consequently, distracting to me as a driver.

That's such a busy intersection to begin with (cars, trucks, cyclists, pedestrians) and now..... a distraction has been added to the mix.

I wonder if this is affecting RTA drivers.

Funny ... one would think the wall would be on eastern border.

Great observation. I live very close and am at that corner daily. You are correct in that it is very busy with all types of traffic.

I also wonder why they used the street and not areas behind the curb.

Is is meant to function as a chicane?

I cannot believe how shallow and mean Facebook is!

So many of the people that brande the Deck as negative, over there saying nasty things that would never fly here!

WOW!

Art at work.
