The longest breeding pair of Bald Eagles in the Emerald Canyon/Metro Parks are back and rebuilding their nest. This would be the 5th rebuild of their nest. The first was when one got hit by lighting, the next 4 rebuilds came from an ever growing nest, that succumbed to wind and tree damage. Last year it came down in a storm before the babies had fledged, but they still managed to rescue them and they soon fledged and moved on.
The Bald Eagles were also made famous when the male was hit by an airplane and killed. Bald Eagles generally mate for life, so day after day the female sat on the nest crying out for her mate. A cry that could be heard for hundreds of yards. Eventually another bald eagle male, dubbed the gigolo male by eagle watchers and metro park's raptor counters. They have remained together ever since.
The female has given birth to 7 Bald Eagles many of which remained in the area, including the ones that sit just south of West Clifton near the water treatment plant.
Also the snowy owls are back on the NorthCoast for those that are bird watchers.
