Eagle Update

Post by Jim O'Bryan »

This spring the Emerald Canyon Eagle nest was blown down yet again. A Bald Eagle nest can weigh more than 1 ton. So when it is far up in a dying Sycamore tree you can figure out the problems with it staying up in the tree.

The nest had two eggs, both lost in the fall. No nest have been built yet, but the bald eagles have rebuilt it 4 other times. Once hit by lightening, two branch breaks, and this the entire tree coming down.

7' around nearly 6' deep!

But, out at Redwood Elementary School, in Avon Lake, they have 3 eggs, that should be hatching any day now.

From Easter Sunday.

The birds with a 6' wingspan fly in 10'-15' over your head, and sit on branches and look at you!

The eagles are in the school's playground, which has been fenced off so that other animals now see it as a safe zone all day long.

It is well worth the drive.

Really great pictures. I will be checking out Redwood School. It is sad that the eagle eggs were lost.

Also check out Fenick's custard just down route 83 on the way back to I-90. Their silk chocolate pit ice cream is spectacular!

As for the Emerald Canyon nest, their will probably rebuild in the area, though it has been disastrous. Male killed by Airplane, and 4 nests down.

I see a juvenile in the skies down by Hogsback Lane, and there are great nesting trees along the river.

We shall see.

The ice cream sounds good!

I just wondered if you used a special camera or lens to get the close up photos. Believe me, I know nothing about cameras!

Lori

It depends on what I am shooting and where. At Sandy Ridge and in Metro Parks I generally use a Nikon 1,000mm, at Avon Lake, any camera and lens will do. You can literally get ice cream, sit in your car and have eagles flying around you.

Right now they fly in and about about every 45 mins or so. Once the eggs hatch that will change to constantly flying in and out.
