Board members announced Tuesday they have contracted with the Ohio School Board Association to begin the formal search for a new superintendent, starting a process that should be completed by the end of March.

While the official "launch" for the search isn't scheduled until Jan. 5, with deadline for applications set for Feb. 19, OSBA has already posted the opening on its Web site. But that's just a preliminary step, according to Geiger. Next month, the association will conduct a series of focus group sessions with staff members to get their input on what qualifications the new superintendent should have. In January, the community at large will get to have its say in at least one and possibly more public forums.

Estrop, who joined Lakewood schools as superintendent in 2005, made public his decision to seek outside employment earlier this year. He will leave Lakewood July 31, 2009 and has not announced future plans.
***
Public input regarding the selection process will be sought in various ways in addition to the January forums. As part of searches in other districts, OSBA established Web sites where residents could voice their opinions and suggestions.

In order to obtain more public input on the selection process for our new Superintendent, two public forums are scheduled for February 3, 2009, at the Beck Center Auditorium. The first forum is at noon and the second forum is at 6:00 p.m.
This is a wonderful opportunity for all Lakewood Residents to voice their opinions and suggestions on our new Superintendent.

Lakewood School Board Press Release wrote:Board of Education President Edward Favre Invites Lakewood Residents to Participate in the Superintendent Search Process
Following is a letter from Mr. Edward Favre, President of the Lakewood Board of Education, inviting Lakewood residents to participate in community meetings to be held at 12:00 Noon and 6:00 p.m. on February 3, 2009, in the Auditorium of the Beck Center for the Arts, 17801 Detroit Avenue, Lakewood. The purpose of the meetings is to seek input from the community in the search for a new superintendent for the Lakewood City School District.
To the Residents of Lakewood,
As you may know, the Lakewood City School District will be hiring a new Superintendent. We are extending this invitation as we value your input in the selection process. The Lakewood Board of Education has retained the Ohio School Boards Association (OSBA) to assist with the superintendent search. As we want to make a fully informed decision, we have included community meetings as part of the search process. The purpose of these meetings will be to discuss qualifications and selection criteria. The results will be helpful during the candidate screening and interview process.
We have scheduled two such opportunities to take place on February 3, 2009, at 12:00 Noon and 6:00 p.m. in the Main Auditorium at the Beck Center for the Arts, 17801 Detroit Avenue, Lakewood. Our OSBA consultant, Kathy LaSota, will facilitate the discussion, focusing on the following: (1) Major issues facing the district for the next three to five years, (2) Performance expectations for the next superintendent, and (3)Essential personal and professional criteria. The focus group sessions are open to the general public and we wanted to make an extra effort to bring this important activity to your attention. Please consider attending one of the one-hour focus groups on February 3. No RSVP is required, but we do hope you will participate. On behalf of the entire Board of Education, thank you in advance for your willingness to be involved and for your dedication to the students in the Lakewood City Schools.
Sincerely,
Edward Favre, President Lakewood Board of Education

Hi,
Thanks.
Is there a link to Lakewood School System's detailed plan on utilizing it's share of the $142 billion dollar stimulus package? Hard to say something could be more important than finding a Super. but I kind of think this is.
Thanks.

I am hard pressed to think of anything more important than finding a new superintendent. Dealing with any such stimulas package, and school funding in general, is just one of the many issues facing our next superintendent.
I also posted a few links in your actual stimulas package thread. See http://lakewoodobserver.com/forum/viewt ... 8024#58024.

Hi,
While I agree a Superintendent is critical in the long term. Isn't there someone servicing this role today? For the next few months? Until a long term superintendent is under contract?
The stimulus money will all be allocated in a very short time. I don't know what impact you can have on seeing Lakewood gets its needed funding. But we need all we can get and I see some appears to be subject to application.
Thanks for the link and I looked at it. Of course I don't understand it, but I see it. I see Lorain is scheduled to get $4.5 million more than Lakewood.
My question is can Lakewood get more?
Can the Lakewood School System do both? Look for an new Superintendent and work to get more stimulus money? Not necessarily in that order.
JMHO

Lakewood Sun Post
With several major issues looming in the coming year, Lakewood schools began its search for public input in earnest this week, as more than 150 members of a newly formed steering committee were scheduled to meet to discuss the future of the district's building program.
Meanwhile, school officials also invited residents to share their thoughts on a new superintendent at two public forums scheduled for Tuesday at the Beck Center.
The superintendent forums next week will be facilitated by Kathy LaSota of the Ohio School Board Association. Lakewood has contracted with OSBA for help in searching for a replacement for superintendent David Estrop, who will leave the post this summer. Two public meetings are scheduled, at noon and 6 p.m.
"This is purely public input," school board president Ed Favre said Tuesday. "There will be board members there, but it's really a chance for the public to have its say."

Tuesday's public sessions at the Beck Center will include some "standard questions," according to Favre. Those questions will focus mainly on what the public wants of a superintendent in terms of background and experience, according to the board president.
"We really have a very complicated school district," he said. "You really need a person with some broad experience."
No advance reservations or notice are required to attend the Beck Center meetings. Both the morning and evening sessions are expected to last about one hour, officials said. [Emphasis added.]
Please, Lakewood, turn out and share your thoughts on February 3, 2009, at the Beck Center Auditorium. The first forum is at noon and the second forum is at 6:00 p.m.
