Loose Ends? Ideas?
Once again I am putting out a call for ideas, complaints, and ideas to move the Lakewood Observer Project forward.
I have the pleasure or running into residents, business owners, politicians, friends, foes, and outsiders. Many have complaints, and suggestions, now let's put them down, and vet them.
As we are undertaking the most comprehensive redesigns of the entire this project ever. I would love to get this info sooner than later. Right now we can build it into the framework being constructed for the new backbone of the project.
One of the things that make this different from others, is we write our own code. The Deck using open source, will change drastically, as we move away from open source.
So please share ideas, likes and dislikes.
If there is something you like but think we can do better, please let us know. If there is something that bothers you, please let us know.
Please email these directly to me, the board, in a suggestion box, call or write.
The Advisory Board, knows we can do it better. We have our ideas, not let's hear yours.
Thanks to everyone that has taken part.
See you January 20th at Mahall's, this party you have all earned.

Believe it or not, I only got on the deck and also did my first article,in the last 8 months. This isn't a suggestion box item but something that would be helpful to make suggestions.
What does the LO project encompass? I know of the paper and the deck and website. I also have seen the new community resources board. I know an objective of the LO is to spark community awareness and participation, to move the Lakewood "Brand" forward.
Is there a way to view the overall project and the goals.
Thanks.

The LO Project also has a pretty comprehensive side that addresses the needs for local businesses, and an economic development package that nearly borders on the LO paying rent for every business in town.
We are also working on nodes that can bring real time relationships between school, city hall, non-profits and the community paper.
There is another part that helps established groups and new groups find funding, and get up and running with little effort needed as from unusual sources.
Many things we cannot speak of for legal reasons, and for secretive reasons with our coding and project.

Jim –
I’m not sure if this idea fits in with your purpose for this thread, but …
I recently stumbled upon this Website, www.RottenNeighbor.com, which allows citizens and perhaps landlords to blow the whistle on bad neighbors and tenants. (Much of this site seems to not be working.)
Imagine an online tool here in Lakewood where information on bad neighbors/tenants could be posted – anonymously or not? - in a database for landlords to access and cross reference when receiving rental applications. I have a feeling that some bad apples are moving, or being evicted, from place to place to place. A locally housed Internet database seems like a cheap way to keep at least a few from being recycled through our city.
Personally, I check with the applicant’s current employer and most recent landlord but maybe there’s a part of the story I’m still not getting.
Perhaps there could be a “good neighbors/tenants†section as well.
Just a thought. Later.

I am not limiting changes to the Observation Deck or the paper.
I am thinking of things that can help improve life in Lakewood for you or others.
I think the new version will amaze, in the change.

Jim - it seems this question comes up every few months. I recall last summer sending you a PM regarding the LHS's High Times and inclusion into the LO paper was well as a couple other things. This was around the time of the car show. You replied of course and answered my questions and so on.Jim O'Bryan wrote:<snip>a call for ideas, complaints, and ideas to move the Lakewood Observer Project forward.

I am wondering though what kinds of ideas are offered by other people. What kind of complaints do you get? What can you share with readers?
Also, we hear of big announcements ('when you wake up tomorrow...'), big changes and so on. What are some of these things and what are the time lines for implementation?
What is the 'new version' and when will we see it?
What should we readers/users expect to see and when? Can you share any of this with us?
Thanks

Some of the problems are legal, others are legal.
1) tomorrow... We have started Observers in other cities.
2) New developments - As we copyright code, and firm up designs they will be brought to the forefront.
What we have here is a very solid tool, that others now see the value of. However the truth is, we can and are working on doing it better much much better.
Currently we are using a combination of proprietary software and open source. After four years, we think we know where we need where to go with it. However, as this is a leap down a very long road, I like to hear various ideas, and concerns early on.
As much as I would like to talk openly, we have contracts and agreements with a number of city/civic groups and as of right now, they do not want us announcing it. I believe the first papers from these groups will be hitting the streets in January, and they will begining to pop up regularly after that.

Stephen Eisel just posted a kudos to a rental repair service - that would be a great feature for the deck and the observer project. We've had other postings, Calanni (bad) many restaurants (good).
Maybe keep it on the local board for the deck, make it permanent on the website as in a list and an addendum to the Mystery Shopper in the paper.

Thanks

The changes I was asking about were and are related to this project. However because of development and copyright issues, I cannot express them here.
At the same time we are moving the entire process into a new level of community connectivity. As we are just constructing the "time-line" around these new developments, it is hard to say much of anything.
I would put it like the Ferrari/Alfa Barchetta that started Enzo off on his company to the F2008 Formula One car. That was actually the comparison that was made to F1. We have 20 improvements to make in the next month to this version of the website. Then all development goes into the new Observer chassis.
The reply about new papers was, we were about to announce the first two. This was the "do you feel different..." As we went from single to family.

Funny you should ask that. We have had others try to hire away some people, but not key. Recently we found a person that went to compeitition and offered to provide them with our secrets. Yet it is one thing to drive a Ferrari and another thing to build one.
Yeah, it is red, but...
