Dog Story

Post by Jennifer Desilets »

I was picking up breakfast on Sunday morning when I saw a woman chasing a dog down 117th street. The dog had tags and she was trying to throw her coat over it. I jumped out of my car to help her corral what turned out not to be her dog, but someone escaped pet. She and I spent the better part of an hour trying catch this very agile dog who kept jumping in and out of traffic! Several good samaritans joined in, offering leashes and dog treats. Eventually the dog's owner caught up with us and took the dog home.

So, I returned home with cold breakfast to find that while I was gone, one of my beagles had run away. She is a tiny little thing that we just rescued recently and she squeezed out under our fence. So out I went leash and treats in hand calling her name all over Lakewood (picture tears) terribly worried that she would be hit by a car. Finally got a call from the shelter that some very nice people had found her. We gratefully retrieved her and I'm going to drop off a home baked pumpkin bread to her rescuers tonight.

This is not the most interesting story, but it makes for better reading than the vitriolic discussion of the whereabouts of the mayor. Folks, the election is over! It's time to heal and move on!

Thanks for this, Jennifer. Aren't dogs the best?

Yes, dogs are great. Someone once told me that wagging their tails is how dogs smile, and I always remember that when I see my dogs tails going. :D

Jennifer...I'm glad you found her!!

When we first got our dog 4 years ago, I knew fairly quickly how she ended up at the County Kennel. If she saw an open door, she took off and I'd be trying to catch her up and down the street in and out of neighbor's yards. She loved to run. I thought we'd have to deal with her escapades forever!! lol

However, she learned how good she has it at our house, and it was just a matter of time before she could go outside with me and not go anywhere. I let her go out to do her business and if I don't let her in quick enough, she knocks (okay, scratches) on the back door...if I still don't come quick enough, she scratches at the dining room window. She isn't interested in going anywhere these days!!

Jennifer, I read your post about your son on the other thread. I can identify. I don't have any kids, but I came home the other day and found my dog fast asleep... on the dining room table.

For a minute there I thought you were talking about my dog, and I thought, 'gee, I don't remember Sparky getting away recently!'

Thanks for sharing this story and attempting to change the focus. My mother used to say 'if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all.'

That thought has been playing in my head for the past couple of months - gee, i wonder why . . .

I am glad your story had a happy ending! I brought home a little dog last month (that I ended up finding a better home for) that was a sprinter! I came home one day and my husband was looking very stressed out and asked me "Do you wonder why I am sweating?" I thought he was proud of starting to work out again and then he told me he did work out and then opened the front door and the new doggie sprinted out. Knowing I would go into a panic he ran up Clarence and up Detroit in and out of traffic!! Some girls who had the same problem with their dog stopped to help as did a groomer on Detroit and they finally trapped him in a yard! I still cry from laughing when I think of him running up the street in his work out shorts, black socks and flip flops!!!!!! I think he did it more for me than the dog but when I read your story I was started laughing thinking it was my dog!!! This does go to show that what comes around goes around and you were helped after helping someone!!!!

Those beagles must be sneaky ones! :)

My girlfriend and I rescued a lost beagle pup who we saw dangerously running into Bunts Rd. a couple weeks ago. Since we weren't able to find the owner that night it stayed at our place, but we left note with the Lakewood animal shelter and the owner made contact there the next day and we were able to return it. It is important to remember to leave information with the animal shelter, it worked very well in this situation.
