Cancelled Halloween at LHS?

Post by Justine Cooper »

Is it true that they canceled all Halloween, costumes and parties at LHS tomorrow? I hope not. High school can be so hard with testing and hormones and all that and this is one holiday that is fun and carefree. It seems all the holidays we grew up in schools with are disappearing. I am not so sure I like all the political correctness. I miss good old American holidays.

I can confirm that yes, it is true. Students are NOT allowed to wear costumes, etc. tomorrow.

Probably for safety reasons. I know that they always outlawed face paint and masks, but not costumes in my day.

Must be with all the things that have been going on that they decided it's best to keep things normal in the halls.

It was canceled out of respect for the family of the student who passed away last week.

Well I know I will be called a communist for disagreeing, but while I think it is great they are excusing kids for the funeral Friday, I don't agree with canceling anything Halloween for the whole school. Just my opinion. Don't expect everyone to agree with it. I always loved dressing up for this holiday at that age and I know a lot of kids are really disappointed. There has to be a little silly fun intertwined in life's seriousness sometimes.

I just drove by Hilliard and Warren and the crossing guard is dressed like a very colorful clown and all the students she is crossing are dressed normal! :? Hayes is having a Ho down so the kids are only allowed to dress in cowboy/cowgirl but boy do they look cute!!!

Last week there was a large cry about the manner in which LHS handled a potentially dangerous situation. I'm not offering a judgement on those concerns, just pointing it out.

Now, because of those events of last week, LHS felt it best to refrain from a Halloween deviation from the dress code. Again, no judgement being offered, just pointing it out.

Either the Board isn't doing enough, or it's doing too much.

Jeff,
I don't think one has to do with the other. I didn't even know it was a board decision or that it was because of the death. Was the decision just this year to cancel, in light of the incidents last week? I can't help the fact I love Halloween and posted my opinion on wishing it was still here for the kids. It was a lighthearted holiday we enjoyed every year as kids and it just seems more and more is being taken from the schools, to maintain PC. I never grew up with an negative incident related to dressing up in school, but maybe some occurred here and I don't know about them. Roosevelt doesn't dress up at all, so it didn't seem like a board decision, just individual schools.

As for not being happy with how last week was handled, I have no problem saying I don't like the way it was handled and if you have a problem with that I can't help it. It is my opinion and the opinion of some others.

Well, that makes a little more sense than cancelling out of respect for Denzelle's family. I don't get the connection with that one. My son is a 6th grader at Harding and wanted to wear a costume, but what's the point, really, when half the stuff involved in costumes is banned anyway. I just think he didn't want to dress for gym today!

Jeff, you have hit the nail on the head. I believe that the Board has acted in the best interest of the children. Some times people need to step back from the situation and take a look at the big picture.

Wow what beautiful insight Stephen. I think I feel a tear. How many kids do you have at the school and what have you done in response to this family's tragedy while looking at the big picture?
My question was initially about cancelling Halloween. Never knew why and still don't. Is it out of respect for the family or because of dress code? Doesn't matter at this point. I still think kids need a release, a distraction, a little silliness in the midst of it all. You had it Stephen and life was not as heavy for us growing up with guns in school. So go ahead and take my post and twist it to mean something else again. But what have you done in light of the big picture in adding anything positive for the situation or family?

Here's another big picture. I candlelight vigil and a moment of silence, a memorial assembly would be helpful.

Also, returning to normal, celebrating a really silly tradition would be renewing. Bad decision by whoever made it.

It seems like more and more fun and recreation are be taken away from our kids - encough!

Justine, I was responding to Jeff's post. As far as my response to this situation, I will go to US Bank on Friday (payday) and make a donation.
