visitors to lakewood

Post by Ivor Karabatkovic »

My uncle is coming to visit us from Germany on wednesday, and he's excited about halloween since he's never seen it before.

I want to take him out to dinner for a nice meal, maybe even something german.

Any suggestions?

My aunt advised me that as long as we have Weissbier (Wheat beer) in our fridge my uncle will be occupied and happy.

on the list are a visit to the Rock and Roll hall of fame, some shopping around cleveland, Amish country (berlin, ohio etc.) and ohio state to visit my brother.

Any suggestion on things to see? If they're within walking distance great, because he hates driving across the street with a car.

Danke Herr Endress 8)

It looks like I'll have to make a trip to the Hansa Import store over by the west side market. That could be my first stop from the airport.

maybe that's what could go into the Giant Eagle building, an Import store with ethnic foods and beverages of all kinds. Just a thought.

Grab a a couple Weissbier and some paper bags. Ride the Rapid to W25th, Hit the WestSide Market ask for Lou at the meat market(her place is for sale if your uncle is looking for a job). Grab some more beer at Great Lakes Brewing, walk across the longest bridge in the world, turn left at the Jake and the Q, walk past the Hard Rock Cafe, and go into the Terminal Tower if it is clear.

On Prospect take his photo in front of the Goldfish Army Navy Store, home of the legendary Record Rendevous, where the words Rock and Roll were uttered first. Walk down to the Justice Center. from the fourth floor you get a great view of the city, and lots of people in orange jump suits. Walk out the front door, and past Browns Stadium to the Rock Hall.

Back to the Terminal take the Shaker Rapid out to Coventry, walk north down Coventry, Barrel of Fun and Tommy's. Stop and the Mini Mart and grab a six of Pabst, America's Blue Ribbon Beer and head for the Cemetary, walk around, down Murry Hill, past the Peter B. Lewis Building, The Western Reserve Historical Society, past the History Museum and Art Museum, up to CASE.

You should have 4 beers left. Take a bus west on Euclid, the west on Detroit.

Leave the empties in the trash as you enter Lakewood.

FWIW

Jim, you mean in a recycling bin, don't you?

What a great tour. I'm going to print and save for my next visitor. I always take out of towners to the WSM.

jim I knew I could count on you.

Rhonda believe it or not, the selection of beer at Lakewood liquor stores is not great at all.

Rozi's, Simone's etc. are the last stop for my brother who is a beer brewer and taster. That's if he's in the mood for mass produced, crappy stuff that's easy to find.

Hansa has the good stuff, the beer straight out of the "Hallertau" region. Every now and then they get beer that's about 10 minutes away from my home town in Germany.

If you're starting at the West Side Market, you need to start Jim's tour with my favorite breakfast outside of Lakewood... a Sausage and Sauerkraut sandwich on a hard roll (just a dash of stadium mustard for good measure).

That is why I call myself the postman in my own mind.

Driving I have an even better one. The STOP sign with 22 bullet holes in it, the iron peacock, most fun street in Lakewood, you know typical stuff I thought this might be better.

if you're already driving down as far as Columbus, just an hour more down the road is one of the most amazing destinations for any history/war/aviation buff. If you've never been to the Wright Patterson Air Force Museum, I highly recommend it. A lot of people in Ohio don't even realize it's there, but it puts the Air and Space museum in D.C. to shame. (actually, most of the stuff in the A&SM is on loan from Wright Patt.)

If you go, just make sure you've got plenty of room on your camera's memory card.

Brett-- I've been meaning to get down there.

Do you mean it's even better than the new Hadhazy Museum at Dulles?

Stan, I'm not familiar with the museum at Dulles. But, I'm sure its not in the same league as Wright Patt.

I spent a lot of time there as a teenager and even now, I can't go down there without seeing something new every time. They keep adding on and adding on. You'll see everything from replicas and restorations of the earliest aircraft all the way up to the Air Force's newest jets (U.S., French, Russian, Italian, etc.)

If you're a history buff, they have every airplane that has carried the name Air Force One that are no longer in use. And some of them they have it set up for you to walk through. The also have the plane that dropped the second atomic bomb (the Bockscar). They have cockpits you can sit in. static displays of equipment. and tons more.

The only warning, you can not see it all in one day. You can not see it all in two days, so be prepared.

Ivor,

You can always take your uncle for Cleveland beer at Rock Bottom Brewery in the Flats (one of our favorite places to eat). They make the beer there on the premises. We always get apetizers and split - you can't go wrong with the pretzels or the nachos. These are the best nachos we have ever eatten.

I don't know what your uncle likes - but a trip to University Circle is always nice. Botanical Gardens, Car Museum, Natural History Museum and the Art Museum while not open completely is showing the Modern Masters right now.

University circle is on our list as well. He's here until the 9th so we have some time. And I, not being in school at the moment, have time as well.

In our home beer is always bought at the Hansa Import store on...I want to say lorain and W.25th. By St.Ignatius, across from the west side market.

Their prices are very fair, and have a german beer selection as well as some polish beer and some czech beer I believe.

They have a ton of stuff there, including candy from switzerland, austria and germany that I always get. It takes me back home when I was a little kid!
