Price Checking Giant Eagle
I always had the impression that the prices at Giant Eagle were higher than Top's or Dave's. Since Tops and Daves were union stores it didn't seem that union wages had anything to do with the price difference.
Here are some recent comparisons:
Product Daves price Giant Eagles price
Bannanas .39lb .49lb
Romaine 1.79lb 1.99lb
Lettuce 1.49 head 1.49 head
Apples:
Granny Smith 1.39lb 1.79lb
Gala 1.39lb 1.79lb
Red Delicious 1.39lb 1.79lb
Navel oranges .40 each .69 each
Onions 3lb 1.69 bag 2.79 bag
Deli
Roast Beef 5.99 lb 7.99lb
Hard Salami 5.49 lb 5.99lb
Turkey Breast 3.99 lb 5.99lb
Virginia Ham 3.99 lb 4.99lb
I've had the produce and deli at both and the quality seems about the same.
A friend of mine (no, I am not going to give his name and address) was the manager when it was a Tops. He said a few years ago the Tops store was a cash cow. It was their most profitable store.
I wonder if the Lakewood Giant Eagle is someone's cash cow?

Daves
I guess I should have used the past tense for Tops although I think they still have stores in Buffalo.Lynn Farris wrote:I'm confused. Isn't Tops out of business? Where can you get TOPS prices? and where is Daves?
Great comparison list. I wonder how Heinen's stacks up against this group.
There is a very nice Dave's at East 33rd and Payne. Since I work in that area I sometimes shop there. The quality is good and the prices are competitive.

Store
The advantage of having our supermarkets owned by an out of town company is that we don't have to care whether they stay or go.DougHuntingdon wrote:well Aldi's is coming soon if they ever put anything into that big hole they dug at DeLorean, and their prices tend to be relatively low.
One of the conditions of the new development at Bunts and Detroit is that it NOT be a grocery store. Giant Eagle did not want any competition.

How can Giant Eagle make demands on property they never owned?
Just curious.

They had a lease that they would happily keep paying on to keep out the competition.Jim O'Bryan wrote:Bill Call wrote:One of the conditions of the new development at Bunts and Detroit is that it NOT be a grocery store. Giant Eagle did not want any competition.

I hate Giant Eagle in Lakewood, it is too crowded. Certain days of the week the selves are kind of bare. The prices are higher than at the Giant Eagle in Rocky River on some items. I try to only purchase there if I don't have time to go anywhere else. I usally shop at Costco, West Market and Marc's in Rocky River.

I usually either shop at Heinen's or Costco for bulk stuff. I agree, the Giant Eagle is just too crowded and I don't like the people that work there.
I'd rather go to Rocky River and spend my money at a locally own grocery chain than stay in Lakewood and pay an out of state company just their employees can act like they're rather light themselves on fire than smile or help someone.

Aldi's is great with prices but no fresh meat. Nature's Bin is the best for fresh and healthy food. If you can find someone to split the $50 membership at Costco's in Avon, they have some good deals and have an extremely well run business. The best ethics and treatment of employees that I have heard, as well as exceptional return policies.

Costco is fantastic. Jennie has a membership, and we always shop there whenever she's home from med school.
