City Worker - Bill, you should tell our side!

Post by Bill Call »

I ran into an employee of the City of Lakewood awhile back who knew who I was and who had read some of my posts. What follows is a reconstruction of our short conversation. What follows is the comment of one person and represents the views of that one person. This person is not in a management position.

City Worker – Bill, you should tell our side. People think that this job is easy. It’s not that we don’t care. There is a lot of work to be done.

Bill – I guess I could post something from the employee’s point of view.

City Worker – Our people work hard on the graffiti and maintenance. You just wouldn’t believe how much time we spend trying to remove that stuff. It’s not easy to get off. You should let people know that we are trying.

Bill - That sounds reasonable. How about if I supply some note books. Why don’t you and whoever else is interested write down what you do each day for two weeks. Just keep a log. What time of day do you start, what your first assignment was, how long it takes and what you did next. If we could reconstruct two weeks of effort I think it might make a good story.

City Worker – Uhhhh, I wouldn’t want to do that.

Bill - Why not?

City Worker – I don’t want anyone to know what we’re doing.

Bill – How can people know how hard you are working if they don’t know what you are doing?

City Worker – You people in Lakewood are too demanding. You are always complaining about something.

Bill - People get upset about the graffiti in the parks. The Mayor is taking a lot of grief. And it is an election year.

City Worker – That Ryan Demro is an Ass…. If he gets elected nothing's gonna get done. You know, the Mayor came by a while back yelling at us about the condition of the parks. He said he supports us and we should support him.

Bill - What did you say?

City Worker – We told him to go to hell.

Any idea if this person lives in Lakewood?

Bill:

If your informant and story are true, you have captured the best case for out-sourcing Lakewood park maintenance I've ever read. Who needs Citistat? Just write the RFP....

Bill

Any idea of this city worker is real?

I haven't read anything so weak since, "I overheard in line..."

The City worker is real and the conversation took place as described. I know what was said to me. I don't know what was said to the Mayor.

Oh OK, it just seemed like a weird conversation for bill call to have and write down.

It did favor the candidate that has turned to you for help, while underlining many of the points you made.

What an opportune meeting!

Don, I think the answer to your question is in the part of the story that goes:

City Worker – You people in Lakewood are too demanding. You are always complaining about something.

Bill

A relative? maybe through marriage?

Come on.

What I find troubling is that any one would put this out without a name. Right now if Mayor Tom George was as spiteful as MC was, all city workers would be getting hammered.

Luckily, MTG is not so much a head hunter.

Still it is a terrible thing to put on all fellow workers. "City Worker tell MTG to go to hell." I am sure all of his fellow workers are very happy with this worker that is so dedicated to the city he has left the city.

I agree with other, how can a Mayor do any job well if the people under him are lazy, workers that care more about attacking the city and their boss.

Bill, the Observer is all about having the conviction to stand behind your words and posting them. Not cowering in some little cave and begging others to post nameless comments. Another thing I cannot understand. Had he used his name and had the conviction he would be protected by the law against being harassed or being fired. But sniping like this protects no one and allows everyone to be open for attack.

Bill, bill, bill

I always get a kick out of you.

Jim is this you being fair and unbiased?

It seems out of character for you.

Don

Let's try this.

Someone at LD Farris thinks the building department is filled with idiots that can go to hell.

Now go get your permit.

How fair is that to anyone in the Farris clan?

FOR THE RECORD NO ONE FROM THE FARRIS FAMILY HAS EVER ATTACKED THE BUILDING DEPARTMENT. just an example.

Don, what I have never understood is this fear of making the comment and owning it. When I meet total strangers for a meeting, even at a coffee shop, I go with Hi, and my name. At business meetings I am introduced.

Faceless second hand comments do not even register in my head. Especially when they attack a person the person who is doing the quoting does not like, it holds very little water.

When have I ever been unbiased? It seems that when my bias is on your side you love it, when it is not you hate it. All I can say is it is my bias, I own it, I say it and I am available for all discussion that follows. Fair, you tell me if I am fair in my discussions about this city. Maybe it would be fairer if I only allowed posts I agree with?

Sad that this out of town slacker carpet bagging in Lakewood on my tax dollars does not feel the same. if you ask me, he is complicit in the problem and allows it to continue. He holds as much or more blame.
