Lakewood School Tours--Very nice
I just got back from a tour of the new Hayes Elementary. It was very, very impressive.
Tours will be available again next Saturday throughout the day. I encourage everyone to check out the new buildings. I tip my construction hat to the schools for putting these tours together....smart marketing before the upcoming Issue 4 vote.
I tried to take some photos but they came out really lame. I am hoping some of our LO shutterbugs were able to make some of the tours.

Mike,
I am glad you enjoyed the tour!
Harrison, Hayes and Harding will all be open for tours again next weekend. Tours will be conducted on the hour at 9, 10, and
11 am, and 12 and 1 pm.
Emerson will also have tours on the same timing. This gives you and our community the opportunity to see the need for renovation and updating both Emerson and Horace Mann require.
Finally, I hope you and everyone else will find a way to visit Harrison within the schedule above for a few reasons....
...see a demo of some of the technology all four new schools will have beginning next Fall
...Harrison is probably furthest along in the construction effort. It is my understanding that Harrison will be outfitted with student and teacher desks by next weekend.
...Wow!
Better Schools..Stronger Lakewood

Friendly Reminder....
All four new schools (Garfield, Harding, Hayes and Harrison) will be open tomorrow for public tours. Also, Emerson will be open for those wanting to see the state of our old schools.
Tours will be conducted on the hour.....9-10-11-12 and 1 p.m.
Yes, Garfield will be open for tours tomorrow.
Given the manhours required and challenge of coordinating tours, these tours tomorrow will be the last ones for awhile.
We hope you can attend. It should be a beautiful day.

I went through Garfield and Harrison today. Very impressive.
My kids have all grown up in the old buildings, so they won't get to enjoy being in the new ones, but I'm very happy for all the kids that follow them into these great new facilities.
Every generation, or so, of Lakewood residents has stepped up to leave a legacy of new or improved public facilities for those that follow. I'm proud to be here now as we build and improve schools, and expand our public library.
Together we are leaving a nice mark.

Nothin' shakin' on Shakedown Street.

You just gotta poke around.

My dad, former Harding band, orchestra and choir director Robert Rice, and I, went through the new Harding today. Dad was exceedingly pleased that the new facilities had large rooms supporting music.
We hope that all of you will support the upcoming school levy, for the future of Lakewood's children.

I toured my former schools this morning, Hayes and Harding. One big WOW to all involved from the citizen's committee which developed the overall plan, the school board for demanding excellent buildings, the architect for designing to that specification and the contractors for executing the construction.
My overall reaction at Hayes was "wouldn't it be great to be a kid in this school!"
Harding is more heavy duty and it will do a great job for students in that crucial age group.
As Steve Davis put it so eloquently, we each have to leave an even better legacy for tomorrow's kids than that which was so selflessly and generously provided for us.

Fire Marshall, Scott Gilman has been telling us about many useful features of the new schools.
One design aspect includes the ability for parts of the buildings to be used by the citizens of Lakewood without disturbing or jeopardizing the students.
If we were in a situation where extended shelter was necessary for citizens, the schools can house those needing shelter and schools can still operate safely.
When we had the Fry Ave. situation and the High School was used as a temporary shelter, this would not have been possible.
