Letterman jackets

Post by Ivor Karabatkovic »

Does anyone know a alternative to Geiger's in the nearby area that offers letterman jackets?

I received a letter from the baseball coaches for my duties in athletics and I wanted to get a jacket to show off my LHS pride. but I don't have the $220 to cough up at the moment. If it was in the $150 range I would be able to get one!

thanks in advance!

Ivor,

Try Jim Mayer Sporting goods in Fairview Park. It's on Lorain Rd. around W.220th not sure of exact address. Or ask Mr. Thayer if there is anyone else the school deals with. Sometimes the school work with a certain dealer to provide letterman jackets to student-athletes.

What size do you wear? I'll put the word out, since I have some really cool people all over the west side that keeps an eye out for me, in the way of collectables. They spot things all the time. many times not a collectable but just a good deal. No guarantees, but "ya never know".

I would not purchase these jackets when in school. Then again, I guess I was a renegade. They may be nice jackets, often times 100% wool, but everyone is not made of money. A lot of students would spend a lot of money on them when they really could have used the money for something else like maybe a good pair of boots when they had to walk to school through the snow uphill both ways.

I have to agree, back when I was in LHS, the really cool guys didn't wear letterman jackets. If you had a letter, you put it on a white. button down sweater, so you could wear it more often.

Sweater = practicality + more use + lower price than a jacket = good move.

Unless it's not "cool" to wear a sweater anymore.

GAHHhhh. I remember sitting in a pizza place, and a bunch of us guys and girls were talking about the future, and one topic of talk for a couple hours was how we would ALWAYS change the way we dress to stay looking "cool" as in what was cool at LHS, no matter what age we were.

Now, I'm a class of '68 dude, and somehow can't get into showing plumber's crack, wearing size 48 jeans when I have a 34ish waist and emulate 50cent, tho I don't condemn anyone that wears that stuff.

So, Ivor, how about some photos of what is "cool", clothes wise, with some photos of some of the LHS inhabitants for us that are curious?

chatting with gary rice over this, he gave me some great stories from his time at LHS.

He also told me about the white sweaters, which i found pretty neat!

now, everyone wears polo's, jeans and button down shirts too. If you have a letter in athletics or band, you wear a letterman jacket (money permitting, of course).

I've had the same winter jacket since 6th grade, and it's still big on me! I don't mind continuing to wear it, it keeps me warm.

The letter I have received from the baseball coach reminds me of the struggles I've had to go through in the past decade, and it reminds me that there are people out there who appreciate hard work and dedication.

so it's not a matter of what's "cool" in 2007, it's just a symbol of the times I've had in high school and the people I've been blessed to meet throughout this whole experience.

Ivor--- I can remember to this day the challenge match I had that would determine whether I would get my letter for wrestling. I had the numerals (for JV) but by the time I got my letter - it was awarded right about now- there was probably only one more time that I could wear the white cardigan letter sweater with it on.
I still have my Harding "H" of which I'm very proud.

What really matters is that you earned the letter, not whether you'll actually get to wear the jacket or sweater.

Congratulations-- Stan '67

My letter sweater (for Marching Band/Music) was wisely purchased a few sizes too large for me by my parents, so it continued to fit over the years, and was particularly keen and nifty (there's two '50's-'60's slang words for you!)

As Mark will probably recall, having that sweater was also a controversial thing to do, as letter sweaters up to that point had been for sports, as far as I recall. I took some grief for having a band sweater.

I wore it over the years at the nostalgia days at the school where I taught. Fact is, I still have those awful black-rimmed glasses from high school too. They look so bad, that they look good!

Then I missed a right turn somewhere, and the rebellion fun started (see this week's Observer for my a picture of my shoes)

Oh yes, that letter sweater came home one day and I threw it in the wash. Bad move, it was wool. It would probably make a nice sweater for a small dog now. Not wanting to lose the sweater or the letter, I put both under glass, and they are among my treasured mementos.

Hey Stan,

Thanks for reminding me!

Somewhere, I have my Harding "H" too!

Now where did I put it?

Maybe under those pink champagne drums?

Stan and Gary aren't the only ones with their Junior High letter sweaters....But, I know where mine is!

I've got both the Horace Mann athletic and music letter, also a chevron given out for membership in multiple organizations, as well as a bunch of hash marks, one for each year of membership in each organization....It's really loaded. And many fine memories. My daughter recently wore it as a 50's custume.

It doesn't fit so well anymore. Nothing to do with washing!

Whoa. I still have my H from Harding too. As a matter of fact, it was from Bob Rice. Had an L from Lakewood Band too.

Personally, I think the world needs to see an article on the history of the styles of LHS dating back to the Racks and Ivy's. The subject doesn't even "google".

It's a historical part of the Wood and also the West Side, plus it's exclusive to Greater Cleveland. I traveled to every major city in the U.S. and talked to guys from all over in the military, and believe me, we have the corner on that era and style trend.

For those on memory lane of LHS and sweater wearing, while the guys wore cardigan sweaters, the girls wore Angora sweaters.

While I'm at it, does anyone know the whereabouts of Judy Kassouf, the unbelieveably awesome and entertaining baton twirler from LHS '67?

She probably drew more people than the football team and in that time LHS was the LEL champions.

Btw.....Joe, you don't agree that Beyonce' and Shakira are hot? : :D :
