What is Lakewood doing to attact more minorities ?????
According to the 2000 census Lakewood is made up of 93.1% whites. Maybe Lakewood should be making a concious effort to attract more minorities to our fine city. With the varity of homes, condos and apartments to buy/rent this would be a great place for anyone to thrive.
We need to make more people aware of the oportunities here, business wise there are many empty store fronts along Detroit and Madision that need to have new exciting business ideas in them. Please no more antique shops. Enough already.
We need to expand our cultural outlook in Lakewood to set us apart and make our city vibrant and alive. Think it could be a positive step in the renassiance for Lakewood!
God Bless America!!!

I had lived near Bunts off Madison and in the West End a few times.
Do European immigrants count as 'Diversity'? A lot of Middle Easterners, Central Asians, and bi-racial people probably think of themselves as 'White' in terms of census bureau check boxes. And basically take up the same behavior and consuming habits as average white Americans of their region after a generation or two.
More than 1 in 10 people in this Country are immigrants. That seems unreasonably high now that we are a developed nation.
The Somalians I worked with in Columbus were telling me ethnic Somalians in Africa don't think of themselves as black Africans. That distinction is probably lost here, but does add another quality to diversity, if not increase its magnitude.
Cleveland's diversity has increased a lot over the years. They turned out fine. I will ask former Mayor Mike White: he lives on an alpaca farm in tuscarawas county, OH.
Here is a remarkable development in the quest for diversity: Central Americans move to Los Angeles. The most attractive form of enculturation is to become a violent Gang Member or accomplice. Then they move back to Central America and Export American Culture!. It is enough to cause someone to hit themselves in the head endlessly.
It is nice to have variety. But "diversity" too often seems a mindless buzz word. Variety is only interesting until it becomes a tedious burden.
Rents and housing prices are quite modest in Lakewood. If people qualifying as diversity-enhancers want to move to Lakewood, there is little stopping them.

Ryan,
You dont live in Lakewood now?
Diversity may be a buzzword to some, it is life to others.
Here are the census numbers:
e persons, percent, 2000 (a) 93.1%
Black or African American persons, percent, 2000 (a) 2.0%
American Indian and Alaska Native persons, percent, 2000 (a) 0.3%
Asian persons, percent, 2000 (a) 1.4% 1.2%
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander, percent, 2000 (a) Z Z
Persons reporting some other race, percent, 2000 (a) 0.6%
Persons reporting two or more races, percent, 2000 2.7%
Persons of Hispanic or Latino origin, percent, 2000 (b) 2.2%
All Im saying and advocating is we as a community actively promote Lakewood as a alternative and I place to continue their lives. Promote a more varied (better word?) gathering of Americas. Lakewood has many around 200 homes/condos for sale and tons of rentals available thoughout the city. Detroit and Madison are spotted with empty store fronts. These could become possibilities instead of continueing eyesores.
Bottom line,
What is the city doing to promote bringing a variety of great people to our neighborhoods?

I think Lakewood's getting more diverse all the time ... though I live in the west end, I tend to frequent places on the east end, and the last time we dined at the Thai Kitchen, there were all sorts of folks walking around on the sidewalks around Birdtown speaking a wide variety of languages. I recognized Russian, but there were several others that were definitely distinctly different, though I could not recognize what they could be.
I think new immigrants are moving into Lakewood, though on a census they may be considered "white/caucasian" because of the narrow view of statisticians.
Either way, it's a good thing. This is an immigrant nation, and adding more just adds vitality to us as a city, a nation, and a people.

This is it in a nutshell isn't it?
We must all work to bring a variety of people into Lakewood and our neighborhoods, 100% blind to race, color, creed, lifestyle, etc.
I hate to see any one group singled out.
One of the great strengths of Lakewood is the flow through rentals.

Terry,
Color-blindness is color-blindness ... and diversity is diversity. People regardless of color can be diverse ... but I suspect you are using "diverse" only to signify African-American. Frankly, I think all should be welcome in Lakewood, and in a sense, the welcome mat is out because of affordable housing and schools. And if you look around the streets and sidewalks of Lakewood, you will see a variety of people of diverse backgrounds. When I say "diverse," I don't refer to color ... I view it as people of different ethnicities and cultural backgrounds.
I'm a bit odd ... when I hear the term "race," I think it's a misnomer. There's only one race, the human race. Different colors, etc. are not "races," though they have been viewed thusly in the past. Perhaps someone's skin pigmentation is different than mine ... yes, that's a difference between them and I. But there's also differences between myself and someone else with a likewise pasty exterior.
If you want this to be a string about having residents with different colored skin, so be it. But I really view the question of diversity as people of different backgrounds, origins, world-views, experiences, opinions, etc. And yes, Lakewood should encourage that. It'll only make us a better place.

I don't know how old you are but you sound like my daughters (24,27). Skin color has never been a valid indicator of diversity. We should have all learned by now that people are so much more than the color of their skin, eyes, hair, car.....Good call!

I wasnt referring to a particular group of people. I would love to see more people here for all over. South America, Central American,Puerto Rico, Japan, Africa, Korea, India, China, Kuwait, Qatar, Kyrgyzstan, the P.I., just to name a few. I am never intended to focus my hope for expanded diversity in Lakewood on one particular group. I believe Lakewood will be a better place when it is more diverse and culturally mixed. I believe we as a city should actively promote our city as a welcome place for all group to thrives.
God Bless America!!!

I think the city did a welcome letter with information in Latvian. They were helped by the Latvian community. We may have information packages in other languages as well I don't know - but that is a good way to encourage people of other nationalities to move to Lakewood.

good question...
seems like someone who just wants to stir things up by asking such a question.
What is the point? True diversity would be great. I am all for it, but the city has a myriad of thing to do in the meantime...............

John,
Im sorry if my original post offends you in some way. I will continue to advocate for further diversity in our fine city. As far as, the myriad of things we here in Lakewood need to attend to, have no fear, we here in Lakewood have been known to chew gum and walk same time.

It seems to me, just by Lakewood EXISTING, people of diverse origins will move into Lakewood if they choose, just because it's here. As long as no one is keeping anyone out, then the problem doesn't appear to be a problem.
