It is a great place to carry on conversations with one person using ten faux names to get a point out. It is fun to watch the elected officials carry on "serious" discussions with "I.P. Knightly", "Miles Long", "Sunny skye" and other people that are afraid to own their comments. Can't wait to see that in the campaign literature. You pay your elected official to talk with "Bun E. Rabbit."!
But my question would be how many dollars has The Lakewood Buzz pushed back into the Lakewood economy? The charities, the residents?
It is a great place for people to win arguments with themsleves.
In America we have choices, some prefer real issues with real people.

I don't have a problem with Lakewood Insect's use of fake names--pros and cons exist with either real or fake names. I found this LO Observation Deck forum only after Lakewood Insect started censoring myposts and making me wait days for them to show up (if they ever showed up at all). I didn't even post anything controversial like Jim's alter ego Terry might post. I quit posting on Lakewood Insect and seldom go there anymore.
I must say, though, that I have been discouraged by all the big government types on this forum. I generally believe posts are not censored on this board, so the big government types are just a reflection of those who log on here. From increasing taxes on bicycles to literally doubling the police force to replacing all the schools with new buildings, it never ends. I have decided if you can't beat them, join them, so I have joined the dark side. Now, why don't we pay the mayor an annual salary of $1,000,000, so that we can have one of the best run cities in the world!?

A couple things.
Where there are real names their are laws to protect those people. Slander and liable to name a couple. Let's not forget that maybe the most prolific child molester in America was caught in Rocky River after preying on Lakewood's children by using faux names on discussion boards that allow them. Only reason he was caught was LO's real name policy. Was or is he Sunny Skye or Mr. No Bull? When Dr Estrop is talking of Lakewood's children who is he talking to? Brother Petty's friends? How does that make the schools and the children safer?
In our 12,000+ posts we have never had to edit or censor anyone. People are respected for their comments, and take pride in ownership. You can also develop a feel for the person, I become the arrogant snob, and Terry becomes the gnat always looking for away to be a pest. (Terry could you start the boycott again, it was great for ad revenue)
As our member list grows, and our participation lists moves closer to 3% of Lakewood, the elected officials will play less and less to the masses. But I think that is an odd perspective. I went out of my way to get both sides of every argument here to the board from day one. This makes it very hard to play to the masses.
As for day care, have you spoken with Lakewood Observer member Toni Gelisimino, who runs the Family Room? What about Lakewood Observer member Dottie Buckon who heads up Health and Human Services. I think you might be surprised with the answers they give you.

I haven't participated on the other board, mainly because I spend too much time on this one. I'm joining a support group.
But I do have a question for Mr. Warren:
You impress me very much as someone on the cutting edge of societal trends and developments.
In my travels through the "blogosphere" I've noticed that not a single one of them, left, right, or in between, has anything remotely resembling a real-name requirement.
In fact, in a story I saw about the "Yearly Koz" convention, a couple of pepole said a big part of the fun was finally matching real human beings to their familiar "faux" names.
Do you consider all the "netroots" discourse illegitimate because of this? Would the Daily Koz, etc, be more or less vibrant if everyone had to 'fess up to their true identity?

Now back to Lakewood, where my interests are far more concrete and specific.
When talking about starting this project, Mr. O assured me he figured out most of the foe names on the Buzz. Fun time is over. Maybe some day he will publish his list.
He tells me Terry Batdorf is not Mr. No Bull.
Speaking personally, I am not opposed to the Lakewood Buzz. I can’t muster up the requisite suspension of disbelief for a foe name platform. If I am going to suspend disbelief, I prefer to read poetry. Perhaps that is why I served as a reader for the Lakewood Buzz Poet Laureate contest. Again I am not opposed to the Lakewood Buzz; it simply does not suit my personal intentions, ethical inclinations and political values.
I am interested in civic engagement and healthy citizen discourse in one particular place within the whole wide world – Lakewood, Ohio.
I believe civic engagement and healthy citizen discourse build human capital, an embedded behavior set of competencies that hinge on trust and respect for the actual person, that is to say, the concrete living and breathing other on the other side of table or so-called virtual fence.
Trust is the key ingredient to building social capital, something we are attempting to grow with this project.
I don’t trust foe names.
Why puff in the wind of distrust with foe names?
What is the intention of building discourse on such a platform, other than creating buzz? That might suit some people. But that is not the point of the LO project. Both projects hold vastly different premises suited to different personalities and needs.
If I am going to spend any attention and time on subject matter pertaining to civic discourse and democratic engagement in the public sphere, I prefer a good faith effort yoked to a properly named human agent who is committed to accountability and the common good. I want to build social capital with human agents unafraid of scrutiny and critical pressure.
I want to understand the individual subject on the other side of the fence. By extension, I want to measure myself by the ensemble of concrete others properly naming and claiming the chords of the demos piping into the debate.
I believe at this time in history it is imperative for citizens to speak up, own their share in civic discourse and fly in the face of fear.
The real name norm provides that platform. Such a platform holds consequences that interest me.
To spend time and attention debating foe names while holding the intention of actually doing something in the civic sphere seems wasteful to me given my limited resources.
I have read my share of blogs and posts, though I never posted to any.
Time is tight. There is too much content to bog down in foes names
I prefer gold to lead. The real name is the gold standard for civic discourse.

This is more serious. Though I tend to only follow a few message board threads here, and occasionally read an article at lakewood buzz. The real names policy here will help me get black listed elsewhere, should there ever be a need to do so.

Guess I struck a nerve. Jimbo you get offended easily, but only when people don't agree with you. That is sad. I only brought it up because i saw LO staffers using the Lakewood Buzz. Can't you accept that this website is not the only one in Lakewood? Many people use website for different things, none are perfect. Your intolerance is scarey.

Perhaps we will be seeing satellite dishes in yer hood and registering powerful brainwaves on our Congressman Kucinich aluminum/tin foil receiver stations, coming from homies unplugging themselves from image subjagation and mass mediated vidiocy.

As for me, I will to take action and boycott the LO advertisers because I will vote with my wallet when necessary.
As far as when I do for my fellow vets, you have no idea. Just because I refuse to go the low road of the Cowardly Kuch and scamble for photo ops. I perfer to stand for my fellow vets without fanfare. Cause its not about me, even though I am one.

See here on the Lakewood Observer forum, people stand firmly with an identity by their posts and beliefs, because you have a right to take a stand and voice your opinion.
See terry, the observer is about giving every person in the city a voice, an identity. We want you to voice your opinion, as far out there as it may be. We don't block you from saying the buzz as many times as you want, and you don't have to wait a few hours until the administrators approve your message. We don't stoop down to a low level like that.
Go on the buzz and start a thread about the Lakewood Observer and see how for that will get you.
A community forum should be just that, a online community where everyone has his or her place and identity to voice their thoughts and opinions.
Not a group of power-hungry admins editing and shaping your thoughts, feelings, and beliefs into what theirs are.

As for the Male/Female thing I have no idea. It does come and go with the flow. I know that three of our posters are with child, while two just had kids, one just moved and is still unpaking.
But when many discuss items they speak pros and cons. To just say War is no good for example doesn't do the drill down on to why I do not like war. you need to find more, or at least we try to drill down to find reasons.
Often the reason given is not the whole story.
Simple topics like flower baskets. Do we like or dislike ours? Why? Where have you seen them better? Worse? Boards and these round table discussions tend to go in that direction.
