Details of the Harry and the Potters Evnt

Post by Andrew Harant »

Harry and the Potters, a nationally-known rock band from Boston that sings family-friendly original songs about the characters and plot-lines of the Harry Potter books, will be appearing on Wednesday, August 16 at Lakewood Park. The opening act will be Draco and the Malfoys, another rock band inspired by the J.K. Rowling books.

This event, dubbed “Magic in the Wood,â€Â￾ is being made possible by the cooperation of many different civic organizations and individuals as a gift to the children and families of Lakewood. It was first conceived by Lakewood Public Library, The Lakewood Observer and Lakewood resident Shannon Strachan, a Lakewood Public Library Foundation trustee who is also affiliated with Lakewood Alive and the Junior Women’s Club, and Cox Communications.

The city came onboard by offering this event to be held on stage at Lakewood Park. The Lakewood Jaycees have also pledged support in the form of volunteers and a donation of glow necklaces, which will be available at the event. Lakewood Early Childhood PTA will be sponsoring some of the prizes for the costume contest; middle-school and high-school volunteers from H2O (Help to Others) will be doing face painting; and Borders will be selling Harry Potter books and other related merchandise.

The music will begin at 6:00 pm and last for approximately 2 hours, but that’s just part of the event. Families are encouraged to come early and have a picnic in the park before the show. There will be a costume contest. Prizes will be raffled off to children and teens who register their costumes with the library in four different age groups: birth to 4, 5 to 9, 10 to 13, and 14-18. We are also planning a family trivia contest.

Details on the costume and trivia contests, including rules, will be available soon. More events may also be added. Keep checking the Observation Deck and The Lakewood Observer or contact Lakewood Public Library’s Children’s & Youth Services (216) 226-8275 x140.

For information on the band Harry and the Potters, check out the article in the next issue of The Lakewood Observer or visit the band’s Web site at http://www.eskimolabs.com/hp/

I just wanted to give thanks to all those that had a part in putting together last nights concert. It was fabulous. My kids loved dressing up and they really enjoyed the music, today they have listened to a Draco & the Malfoys CD at least five times. I also was really pleased to see so many teens enjoying themselves. I know its hard to find good stuff for teens to do and last night was a really great step in the right direction. Thanks again.
