Even the Plain Dealer editorial board noted Skindell's qualifications when they endorsed him last fall in his quest to retain his Ohio Senate seat, which he won. They spoke so highly of him:

Democratic incumbent Michael J. Skindell, 52, of Lakewood, served four two-year terms in the Ohio House before winning Cuyahoga County Council member Dale Miller's old State Senate seat in 2011. He has distinguished himself as an environmental steward of the Great Lakes and an advocate for the disenfranchised.

Skindell's experience, hard work, deeply informed positions and common-sense approach to hot-button issues make him the clear choice in this race.

I think it's a clear choice for mayor. Even if you support the destruction of Lakewood Hospital and the complete control of the Cleveland Clinic, Summers has shown himself to be totally inept. The entire debacle has been mishandled from the start and now that it's blown up he's distanced himself from the whole mess, even sending Kevin Butler in to take his place "negotiating" with the CC. That's not a leader.

The PD is impressed with Skindell's deeply informed positions while I'm impressed with his dedication as an advocate for the disenfranchised.

He will get us back on the right track. The right direction for all of Lakewood. He will consider the most vulnerable in Lakewood, not ignore them for false promises from a institution that wants to abandon us but still wants to control us.

Nickie is taking a lot of heat for endorsing Mike Skindell. What a shame. A dedicated woman who has capably served her constituency. I'm sure she thought long and hard before making her endorsement given that incumbents are generally thrown the support.

I sincerely appreciate her dedication to Lakewood and her careful consideration of who is the person best suited to lead Lakewood during this difficult time.

She has shown great courage by choosing Mike Skindell. She also proves she puts people over politics and can think for herself.

As I said, what a shame. It does not surprise me.

They have a groupthink mentality - you go along with them or pay the consequences.

That's why a lot of people I know are pretending to agree with the BL group so as to not cause themselves grief, but privately, they are unhappy with the BL propaganda and will not vote for their candidate or agenda.

This is a significant endorsement. State Representative Antonio had the opportunity to work with both Mr. Summers and Mr. Skindell while on Lakewood City Council. She assessed what both bring to this important position. Based on her considerable experience and insight, she took the very deliberate step of not endorsing the incumbent. Instead she chose to endorse Mr. Skindell.
