Special Council Meeting : 31 August, 2015 -- Any update?

Post by Matthew Lee »

I might be missing it, but is there an update on what happened at the Special Council meeting last night (31 August, 2015)?

Council's hand was forced to accept and submit to the Board of Elections (for the November 3 election) the referendum to amend Lakewood's charter.

There was a huge public turnout for this emergency council meeting. The supporters of Save Lakewood Hospital were easily 3/4 of the attendees.

We also got to hear Tom Bullock's reprimand the public about how this amendment is irresponsible and a terrible idea for the city of Lakewood. I wish I had a tape recorder so I could quote it exactly for you. No Tom, it's much more irresponsible to sit by and do nothing while one of Lakewood's most valuable assets is slowly pilfered by the Clinic. The LHA has failed in their trusted mission and this is why the public has taken matters into their own hands. Your incompetence, as well as the whole of LHA, has brought this upon our city. Democracy in action!

Let the cards fall where they may after Nov. 3.

Lately the city has been video recording public meetings, but I don't know about this one.

Meanwhile, there's a bunch of activity by both sides over on Nextdoor. I've got to focus on work for a few days so it would be good if some others could go over there.

Meanwhile Charter Changes at the Charter Review would have removed the words "Hospital"
from the entire charter, with the exception of

LEASE ALTERNATIVE: 11.1(a)
The new section provides for the continuation of the current lease of the hospital and for future leases or other utilization of the hospital as determined by council.

Nothing planned, all these things converged June-September 2015 by accident.

An observation about the three-quarters SLH estimate at the council meeting: I'm starting to hear anecdotal reports from different sources estimating similar proportions. For instance, last I checked that was very roughly the portion of "likes" for the two Facebook pages - 1270 for SLH, 756 for BL..
