Hospital Provided $50 Million in Charity Care in 08 and 09

Post by Bill Call »

From the financial statements:

"Charity Care
The Hospital provides care to patients who do not have the ability to pay and who qualify for
charity services pursuant to established policies of the Hospital. Charity services are defined as
those services for which patients have the obligation and willingness to pay but do not have the
ability to do so. Charity care provided in 2009 and 2008, measured at established rates,
approximated $26.0 million and $23.8 million, respectively, and is not included in net patient
service revenue."

How much charity care will be provided at the new Lakewood Hospital in Avon?
How much charity care will be provided at the new Family Health Center in Lakewood?

In 2008 and 2009 charity care was 16% of service revenue.

In 2012 the Cleveland Clinics charity care was about 3% of total revenue.

Have we found a way to save Lakewood Hospital? Should we just throw those without the ability to pay out the door?
