Ideas for New Parks

Post by Katie Stallbaum »

I understand that Lakewood Park playground will be rebuilt soon. Currently our family is in Vancouver, Washington and we have seen some great playgrounds and I want to share some of the neat features that might be of interest to those planning the next playground.

My children have truly enjoyed the challenges of the area parks. Some of the features include slack chains to walk across, crazy spinning parts, great climbing area, balance beams that tilt as you put weight on them, and roller logs. I am attaching some pictures for you to see.

the parks all tend to look like this....simple, clean, durable and the parts are often connected so kids go naturally from one part of the structure to the next. We have also found that it is easy to keep track of the kids because we can see all the way through the structure when seated on the benches that surround it.

it is fun to sit or stand and spin! something about weight shifts makes this turn. The kids have also sat in "cups" that spin when you pull your legs in.

Great pictures and ideas Katie. I do hope they take some of these ideas into consideration when they rebuild the park. One thing I like about Wagar Park and Madison Park is the variety of activities, although at Madison a lot of the stuff no longer works so it's pointless to have. So yeah cool stuff to do that is kept up. Parks should be a selling point, they are numerous in Lakewood but sadly lacking in quality.
