Lakewood Lost a good one

It is with great sadness that I post this. Joe Milan, who was struck by an RTA bus this past Monday passed away today. Here is the text from a post his family made on his facebook page this afternoon.

"Dear friends of Joe we would like to thank you for your concern, kind words and prayers during this difficult time. Joe was in MetroHealth Trauma Center ICU in critical condition since Monday. He was cared for by excellent physicians and nurses. With much sadness Joe was unable to overcome his injuries sustained Monday morning. Joe donated his organs through Life Bank and will help numerous people. We are in the process of planning his memorial service. Please refer to the obituary column in the Cleveland Plain Dealer within the next few days. Sincerely the Milan family."

Joe was a long time volunteer for the Lakewood Republican Organization and county party and an avid fisher. He will be greatly missed. Prayers for the family.

I heard of this tonight and it is terrible news.

We have been trying to get grasp of what happened that fatal day, and we have held off
reporting these kinds of things as we often do because of the personal side of this.

Joe was a good guy, and a fun guy to discuss life and politics with.

You are already missed.

Part of me is very sad to hear this news and yet I can say I am glad he had called me one of his friends.

He was one of my earliest supporters when I ran for City Council in 2005 and would walk with me when I went door to door and we would walk together for other candidates, we had an easy way about our conversations, mostly about politics but on few occasions we would talk about our regular jobs, families and fishing.

He promised to really teach me how to fish.

I will miss him.

I hope they do a better investigation of the circumstances than they have done to date. From what I read in the PD, he was running to catch the bus at 5AM and ran to knock on the back door. He then slipped or fell and the bus continued on, running him over with the back wheels.

The report said the driver had not been drug tested, as there appeared to be no reason to do so. According to witness reports and Mr Milan's statements to a woman who ran to assist him, the driver knew he was there. Either way, a drug test is standard procedure in a bus accident. Why no test? It seems they just took the drivers word that he never saw him. Did he not feel the bump when he hit him? It sounds fishy to me. I really hope they don't just brush this off. It may have been a terrible accident, but let's be sure there was no negligence.

I had a couple of beers with Joe a few weeks ago at Jammy
Buggers. It occurred to me that night for the first time that he never complained. Or rather he never complained about his health. He had a lot of complaintss about RTA.

There's not much else I can add. He was a great guy, and you always came away from any contact with him feeling somehow better, even if you disagreed with him.

I don't think any of us will ever be able to hear the phrase "worm drowning" without thinking of Joe.

We are somehow less today... yet more.
