Captain Sucker Punch - In Da House

Post by Jim O'Bryan »

Last night Kenneth Warren stopped by his old workplace for a discussion on poetry,
homerics, astrology, numerology, psychology and the Lakewood Observer. It was another
magnificent performance by the man many considered the great oracle of Lakewood, Mr. Warren,
but those of us that new him in a more relaxed surrounding simply called him "Ken."

Those that have heard Ken speak know firsthand what an amazing tale and story he
can build bringing into and constructing a magical narrative that leaves many almost
spellbound, and demanding more. Last night was no difference, slithering between themes,
memes, poets, and facts Ken repeatedly dragged the audience down the "Homeric
Punkhole," to a new level of understanding and confusion.

During the narrative, Ken as he always does, brings up the amazing project called "The
Lakewood Observer," a project designed to let a community know itself better than any
city has ever known itself. As he points out, little did anyone realize at the time, that
Lakewood was a city that feared knowing itself, but even to that end, it has achieved
what very few else have. That we would have a community where elected officials shy
away from light of day and pure civic discourse, a place where people would be vilified
for not wanting to be in "the in crowd," but, even that was something we could all
learn and take away from the project.

The night ended with a wonderful question and answer period and discussion that range
in topics from Byron, to Daniel Thompson, from "The Lake Erie Monster" to Millennium
Moms desperately wanting to be Zombies because their parents had sucked the life
out of them as one would a juice box and throw to the ground.

Yes, once again it was a magical night for all that attended.

It is a rare time nowadays when the founders of the Lakewood Observer get together.
With Ken teaching in Austin Texas, and living and writing in Ransomville New York, and
traveling the USA and Canada lecturing about his book "Captain Poetry's Sucker Punch;
A Guide to the Homeric Punkhole." and the Lakewood Observer and the wild and wonderfully
strange community of Lakewood he used to call home.

To James Crawford, Ben Burdick and the staff of the Lakewood Library, thank you for
another amazing night.
