Community Leaders Breakfast - 3.15.2012

Post by Jim O'Bryan »

Each year the Lakewood Chamber of Commerce puts on a breakfast at Lakewood High
School for Lakewood's Community Leaders. This year's topic was about the new ways
children are learning in Lakewood Schools. The guest speakers were: Matt Shields, 4th
Grade Teacher, Emerson, Pam Thompson, Language Arts Teacher, Garfield, and Sean Wheeler,
English Teacher, Lakewood High.

Great idea that needs expansion/inclusion!

Are only Chamber Members are invited?

Chamber Membership = Community Leader?

In my book, community leaders are the unsong Little League coaches, the Meals on Wheels drivers, the reading mentors at our libraries, etc., etc.

Just here trying to connect the dots in Lakewood!

Peter,

The evening hours in this great city can bring many sights and sounds. Visit the northwest section of Detroit and Warren Roads, you just might be able to observe/listen to the following:

One of the steps toward an invite.

The consecration of obedience has been rumored to have its origins there (Detroit & Warren)...and it still might happen here.

Are you prepared to accept the bond of obedience?

Peter,

No the invitees are not restricted to Chamber of Commerce members. If you'd like to be included next year, I suggest you contact Christine Gordillo at the Board of Education.

Thanks, Heidi ... I will contact her.

Is that how everyone else got on the invite list ... by requesting to be on it? Just wondering what the "criteria" is to be on the invitation list? Is being a member of one of the various Council-approved and appointed citizen boards/commissions (Animal Safety & Welfare Advisory Board, Civil Service Commission, Community Relations Advisory Commission, Fair Employment Wage Board, Planning Commission, etc, etc.) criteria enough? Perhaps being on the staff/board of a Lakewood-based 501(c)(3) organizations could merit an invite? How about those wonderful youth coaches who mentor and shape our kids future? I'm sure our Rec Dept could provide that list to the sponsoring/presenting body (BOE?)

I love Sinclair Lewis' "Babbit." Though written/published in the early-1920's, its deliciously maddening satire about culture and beavior holds true today. For instance: "No, what I fight in Zenith is the standardization of thought, and, of course, the traditions of competition. The real villains of the piece are the clean, kind, industrious Family Men who use every know brand of trickery and cruelty to insure the prosperity of their cubs. The worst thing about these fellows is that they're so good and, in their work at least, so intelligent. You can't hate them properly, and yet their standardized minds are the enemy." ~Chapter 7

Mr. Grossetti: You were indeed on the invitation list as a member of a city advisory board. Your invitation was sent to the email provided to me by the city of all its commissions/advisory boards members. I apologize if you did not receive it. You may want to check with the city to make sure they have the correct email on file.
