Re: Attn Lakewood Cyclists and fans!!!
Missy,
Great to see an old Lakewood tradition revived.
When I was young, I had an avid interest in all things bicycle.
While still in my teens, (more than 40 years ago) I organized and ran the Lakewood Day Bicycle races, and they were run much as your husband describes on his website. I even wrote an article for the Observer about them awhile back. There was also a good sized article about me running those races in the Lakewood Sun Post, WAY back when.
The races were originally held in Lakewood Park. They ran from maybe 1968 through the early '70's. There were several age categories and the Lakewood Merchants Association provided the trophies, along with the city, if I am remembering correctly. I think there may have been a .50 entry fee, to defray expenses.
While unable to participate myself for physical reasons, I had a keen interest in racing bicycle mechanics, at least until my interests in the world of music collided and I started fixing guitars instead.
Bike racing was a fine old American tradition that seemed to fall by the wayside in the years between WWI and WWII. The sport still remains strong in Europe and elsewhere, and presently seems to be enjoying a resurgence in our country.
With today's interest in biking revived, it's nice to hear about bike stuff going on.
Back to the bike, er, the banjo...
