A DOUBLE DIPPING ALERT:

Mr. Markling,

AN ABSOLUTELY NAUSEATING PRACTICE!

So what is this, a 60 day retirement with a rehiring date of 8/1/2011? Plus, don't we get the privilege of providing health care benefits to this individual?

Send a message, hire another qualified professional and let the double dipper find fulfillment in retirement. Plenty of other professionals looking for an opportunity to make a difference!

So Mr. Meeson is apparently satisfied with any marginally qualified drone in the position, rather than the best qualified person?

If the board has looked at other candidates, and found that Ms. Thayer is the best qualified, I say hire her.

Incidentally, I believe we pay health benefits for retired employees, so your implication that we would be paying double health care benefits is probably wrong.

There are worse problems with public employee pension benefits than their being able to take another job after retirement. Probably the worst feature is that so many are allowed to retire at such a young age, compared to workers in the competitive world.

I don't think that Mr. Meeson is suggesting that we hire just anybody, I believe he thinks it would be prudent to simply hire someone from outside the system who is not looking to retire, collect benefits, and work another job at the same time, if I am to understand the situation correctly.

But let me offer a different perspective on this issue. Right now there is a great controversy over the unions in the school and SB5. Many voters don't understand the intricacies of the situation, but they DO understand that what appears to be double dipping. Do you think the school board making a decision like this is going to resonate well with voters, some of whom don't have a single job, let alone a pension AND a job?

I don't think it will. For appearance sake, I just don't think this is a good time to do something like this, regardless of qualifications, whatever those may be.

I don't see any reference to hiring a "marginally qualified drone" in my post. Do you?

Have you seen a job posting that invited other applicants to apply for the soon to be vacated position that Mrs. Thayer is retiring from?

It's my understanding that The State Teacher Retirement System Of Ohio picks up the cost of health care for retired employees-with the following exceptions: https://www.strsoh.org/retirees/4.html
Cost is back on the school district for the rehiring of a retired employee.

By the way, how young would you say is too young for public sector retirement as compared to the private sector?

Scott Meeson

If I remember correctly:
If I stay at my current job until the age of 48, I can retire with full benefits from the state and begin collecting it right away.
If I leave with 25 years, I can either get partial benefits right away OR I wait until 65 and collect full benefits.
Anything before 25 years of service, I have to wait until 65.

Of course, this is assuming the state pension system is still intact...

I personally think 48 is too young for any person to be able to retire and live off a pension. The state will be shelling out me for the next 35-40 years, if not longer. It can't sustain that.

Not everyone will live that extra 35-40 years, however.

Generally, I do believe that pension plan payout formulas and actuarial tables are always being revised on the basis of many types of data.

People often feel differently about these things after they have worked for 30 years.

Having some sort of financial security when one reaches that point is not a bad thing at all.

Remember too that they are paying dearly into those plans as well. It's not the same thing as getting something for nothing would be, after all.

By the way, there are very specific guidelines that need to be followed with rehires after retirement, at least with the STRS system. If a teacher or administrator wants to return to work after retiring, they certainly can, BUT there are definite rules that come into play covering those situations.

Back to the banjo. :D

I thought that Lakewood paid 100% of the teacher's retirement contribution. Did that change? If not, they're not really paying anything into the plan or are you talking about something else?

My remarks were not prefaced in reference to any particular retirement plans, but were intended to be general in nature.

I'm honestly not sure about Lakewood's particular situation. My understanding is, (as a general rule at least) that public school employees and the various boards share in retirement plan contributions in Ohio.

Remember though, (again as a general statement only, and particularly where school administrators are concerned) that these kinds of discussions can oftentimes be a part of negotiations with the various school boards in our country.

I do believe that school districts compete for the best administrators and teachers through the packages that they are willing to provide for them.
