Can you make the Kiwanian cut?

I don't understand why you're aske me to pledge this when I have already said I don't agree with it and will not support it
I don't understand why you're asking me to make this pledge when Jim hasn't been asked to make a similar pledge.
I thought this board supported free speech. Now I am told I must condemn someone's free speech.
I guess all that talk thru the years about how sacred the first amendment is was just that, "talk".

You don't understand why? Contemplate the Objects of Kiwanis:
"To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life.
To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships.
To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business, and professional standards.
To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive, and serviceable citizenship.
To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service, and to build better communities.
To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism, and goodwill."

Lakewood is Liberal, not in my World!

A statement was made that Lakewood is heavily Democratic, when, in fact, the numbers from the Cuyahoga County Board of Elections reflect that we are in fact an Independent community. There are twice as many Independents as there are Republicans and Democrats combined.
I didn't expect anyone other than a political hack to know this. I just think that it throws a helpful wrench into what can sometimes be a stereotypical discussion.

C'mon Ryan.
Like it or not, the city leans heavily democratic.
The election returns of the past decade or so bear out the fact.
Jim, once again we agree!

I just glanced at this crazy topic and saw seven pages. I had resolved not to read them, but I did. I think this is the open source model at its best. BRING IT ON!
Jim you made a sweeping statement that no good conservative can ignore. The Republicans (not conservatives or the right), have managed to bury our state among the bottom in all lists except taxation. We are now the third highest taxed state in the nation and what do we have to show for it?
Over the last decade the size of state government has grown 71%. Has anyone's income on this board grown by that much? Government is out of control and taxation never leads to prosperity.
Jim, you are absolutely right. We aren't better off, but the left or the middle had better come up with some answers soon, otherwise we are just going to continue on the downward spiral. None of us deserve that.

Mike,
It might lean that way, but the registration does not reflect that fact and there are abberations. Just thought I would raise the discussion.

Could you start your own thread?
This is a discussion about the merits of boycotting a volunteer paper that turns it's profits back into positive projects for the city of Lakewood and it's residents.
You know, the concept of not supporting Lakewood Businesses that support Lakewood residents in an effort to prove, who knows what?!

I know this already. What I fail to realize is how I am supposed to live by this creed when Demro & Salo either get bashed all the time, or as in the case with Ryan Demro, get little or no credit for anything. This observer thing is just another example. Is this just another liberal double standard?

This borders on amusing. If the board does not regulate ANYONE's posts. How can the board be faulted for any of this? The boycott was called by a person that signed on to the board and two days later called for a boycott, based of a false premise. Ever since then we have been trying to get him to understand while you jump in about what is fair. Ken has pointed out as have others that not only is the premise false, but that he has become libelous and that he should correct that post. Meanwhile you fight a fight for a war that is not even being fought or is real.
I for one cannot remember Ryan Salo being attacked or shut down. I certainly do not remember Ryan Patrick Demro ever being shut down or marginalized. Ryan Salo only has 9 posts, and those came during his campaign. Ryan Patrick Demro seems to be active but would also appear to be busy.
These are your perceived notions that you bring to this board. It is not true at least for the Observer.

I am with Jim on this...can you cite examples of this at all? Or are you projecting your feelings on things based on conversations outside of the Observation Deck? Even as an evil liberal democrat I have had only great things to say about Mr. Demro and have yet to see a single statement from anyone that marginalizes him on the Deck (or off of it my circle of evil liberal friends, either). I have seen plenty of people saying things like Joe above, though, which seems to be the most marginalizing thing on here. I think this is what Terry is doing, too. He is projecting his world-view of Liberals and Democrats and pasting it on the Observer Deck as being the status quo here when that clearly isn't the case. He obviously never read on here anyone calling for the death of Bush but maybe he heard on Rush Limbaugh that it was happening and thus it must have happened here.

Jim,
I have no intention of starting another thread. I was just commenting on a statement that was made in regard to this line of posts. I like to read here, but don't intend to engage in a long debate with Deneen over political parties. You were right, I am busy. Although, since I am on Spring Break this week I might actually get you an article for a Ward II Update.
-Ryan
PS- I really don't feel that I have been marginalized on this Board or in the community. Most of the marginalization and personal attacks that I experience are when I am at City Hall the first and third monday of the month at roughly 7:30pm, or when I am on that other Lakewood website.

Jim, I read the city council reports on your site, and Mr. Demro gets little credit for what he does. Sometimes it's as if he doesn't exist according the reports about council meetings.
This paper, under Mr Warren's observation, should do everything it can to promote Mr Demro. The last thread I can recall regarding him was people bashing him for a proposed smoking ban.
Why you and Mr. Warren can't understand the double standard is amusing to me.
I certainly don't recall anyone evoking this Kiwanis rule during that debate (especially for a comment I'm simply saying someone has the right to say, not that I agree with it).

Me too. Don't you see what's happening here?
A media outfit that based part of its raison d'etre on the bias, failings, and shortcomings of other media outfits is now coming under attack for its own bias, failings, and shortcomings.
And is just as determined to defend itself against the charges.
Crapping on the media is as ubiquitous, and satisfying, as a bag of Doritos, and your ankles don't swell afterwards!
To the LO, the PD, the Sun, the Buzz, 3,5,8,19,25.43, the Free Times, the Scene....I love ya all! You're all great in your own way, and you all suck in your own way. Keep on keepin' on!
