Ward 3 & Ward 4 Road Repair Marginalization

Post by Lori Allen _ »

Over the past few months, I have used ODOT's pavement condition rating system to see just how bad some of our roads really are (since the map showing the ratings on the city website has not been updated since 2012). It appears that Wards 3 & 4 have the worst roads. According to ODOT standards, if a road gets a pavement condition rating of less than 75, said road is in only fair or even worse condition.

See below chart for a comparison of the miles of roads that have a rating of less than 75 by ward:

As you can see, wards 3 & 4 have the most miles of road with pavement condition ratings of less than 75. Now, a few roads in Ward 4 were re-paved this summer. However, I believe these were mostly funded through federal CDBG funds. If we would not have had federal money, the comparison chart would like more like this:

We are the seventh highest-taxed city in Cuyahoga County. I am perplexed as to why more of our roads are not being done. Drive down Brown, Richland, Newman south of Franklin, Lincoln south of Madison, or Bayes east of Lincoln and you will see what I mean.

I also recall reading on the deck several months ago that when Franklin & Archdale were re-paved, that residents would have to pay for curbs. I would think that the city could have negotiated curbs into the contract. In my opinion, with the condition that our city is in now compared to five years ago, I believe that we are spending some money on unnecessary things at City Hall and not always on the residents.
