Sam O'Leary's Latest Views on Lakewood Hospital

Post by Lori Allen _ »

While catching up on some reading this weekend, I caught the article that appeared in the Pee Dee where Sam O'Leary was interviewed (Ward 2 Councilman). Of course, the article was done by Bruce Geiselman (the mayor's private press secretary).

After months of attending council meetings, I was holding onto the hope that Sam O'Leary would help us save our hospital. After reading this article, my hopes are fading.

From the article:

Councilman Sam O'Leary said he would like to explore the possibility of operating a small inpatient hospital, possibly alongside the proposed family health center and emergency room.

"That would make a lot of sense for our community," O'Leary said. "I think there is a strong point to be made that we don't just need an emergency department, but we need observation beds as well."

O'Leary said he hoped the Cleveland Clinic would be open to that type of negotiation. Part of the proposal under discussion with the Clinic includes using about $30 million from the Lakewood Hospital Association to establish a community health fund. At least part of that money could go toward the cost of a small hospital, O'Leary said.

I have always liked him as a councilman. I feel he treats the citizens respectfully. However, I feel he is trying to appease both sides. I am still wondering why it has to be the clinic.

I feel that there is no way we can get a good deal from the clinic, especially with Mike Summers, Madigan, and Bullock being a little too friendly with them. My hope is that Sam will stand up to the clinic and to the mayor and ditch the clinic. I have heard that we have two other interested providers. A small, dinky hospital is not the answer. I would like to encourage Mr. O'Leary to let us know if he is for saving the hospital or not.

Lori,

I disagree with your take on Sam O'Leary and his recent comments.

Councilman O'Leary has acted courageously and with integrity throughout this process.

After all, he was threatened by CCF attorney Meehan for taking a position adverse to CCF--He has stood up for what he believes despite heat from Summers, Madigan and Bullock--and he has not backed down in the face of CCF's threats.

I believe that he will do what he believes is the right thing for Lakewood.

He certainly has my vote in November.

I agree with Brian, Lori.

Ward 2 Councilman Sam O'Leary has acted courageously and with integrity throughout this process.

It would have been very easy for Mr. O'Leary to cave to the pressures of the CCF and other "powerbrokers" especially since Summers, Madigan, and Bullock were so quick to cower under pressure (and that is giving Summers, Madigan, and Bullock the benefit of the doubt).

I also believe that Mr. O'Leary will do what he believes is the right thing for Lakewood.

Matt,

I agree with you that Sam O'Leary is the best choice for Ward 2. However, some of his comments in the article regarding the hospital were a little unsettling. He does seem like one of the most honest council members.

This is not directed specifically at Sam, but for Lakewood politicians, candidates, and politicians in general:

Why is it so difficult for those in office now and those running for office to step forward and take a firm stance on this issue? I have firmly said that I support saving the hospital. As far as I have been told by many, the others are skirting the question and not giving a true, solid answer.

Everyone in all of Lakewood should question those in office or running for office. There are some that will tell you anything you want to hear just to get a vote.
