The Reason for Seniors Alleged Threats About Hospital?

Post by Lori Allen _ »

After reading Marguerite's post about residents of The Westerly alleging threats from management that they will lose their housing if they speak about the hospital, I was curious to find out who the managers and higher-ups are at The Westerly.

In a search of public records, I noticed that the parcel of land that The Westerly sits on at 14300 Detroit is owned by a non-profit called Lakewood Senior Citizens Inc. Also through public records, I was able to find a list of the higher-ups at this organization. I noticed that a few of them sit on the Lakewood Hospital Association or Foundation Boards of Trustees or have strong ties to either of these two. Below is a list of the individuals:

According to my research, Curtis Broskey is the President & CEO of Lakewood Senior Citizens Inc. and also sits on the Lakewood Hospital Association. Mary Sauer is apparently one of the directors of Lakewood Senior Citizens Inc. According to my research, she is the Chief Nursing Officer at Lakewood Hospital and is present at many of the LHA Board meetings. Larry Faulhaber is apparently on the LHF Board and is also the special projects manager for the Barton Senior Center (connected to The Westerly).

While the following people are not directly affiliated with the LHA or LHF to my knowledge, they sit of the board for Lakewood Senior Citizens Inc. I find it interesting that many of them have strong ties to the community and especially strong ties to the mayor:

Bill Gaydos (Lakewood Planning Commission Member and opponent of saving the hospital, I believe)
Tom Fraser (CEO at First Federal of Lakewood, I believe)
Tim Laskey (Mayor's campaign treasurer, probable close friend, and neighbor)

This is the most current list I could find. If what the residents of The Westerly are alleging is true, then I am very disgusted. Also, I believe that this could be classified as elderly abuse or abuse of disabled persons. I cannot understand why an LHA member is the CEO of Lakewood Senior Citizens Inc. How can you work with the elderly and disabled every day while seeing that many of them require frequent medical treatment and then want to take their hospital away from them? I believe that this could be considered a conflict of interest. If all this is true, it appears that our mayor, the LHA, LHF, and the other cronies of the mayor will stop at nothing to see the hospital destroyed. As far as I am concerned, this alleged treatment of our seniors and disabled citizens is about as low as one can go. However, I would not be surprised to see more shenanigans from this group.

Optimistic note:
Perhaps I have overstated the fear or concern expressed by some residents of the Westerly. If so, I personally apologize.
We may be in a more favorable position regarding Westerly's management, than I had feared.
Lori, I appreciate your providing names of leaders and community persons who have some kind of interest or control at The Westerly.
For now, let's put this thread to rest - while we work with a positive attitude to provide real information to the residents so they are knowledgeable about the possibilities for Saving Lakewood Hospital.

Marguerite,

I am reminded of the words of John Dickinson, one of our founding fathers..

"United we stand, divided we fall".

We could all learn from these words.
