Around the Corner Cafe and Bob Evans in Lakewood to Donate a Portion of Sales on Saturday, September 20 to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Friends of the Poor Walk
Two Lakewood eateries are joining the cause to help Northeast Ohio’s poor.
On Saturday, September 20, both Around the Corner Cafe, 18616 Detroit Avenue – and Bob Evans, 14115 Detroit Avenue -- will donate 15 percent of customers’ total dine-in meal purchases at their patrons' request to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP). The effort is in support of SVDP’s Third Annual Friends of the Poor Walk that day to raise money for needy individuals and families in Northeast Ohio.
“We are thrilled that these two Lakewood establishments are showing their support of those less fortunate in our community,” said John Litten, SVDP executive director and Lakewood resident. “We encourage everyone, regardless of whether or not they actually participate in the walk that day, to dine at these restaurants on September 20 and enjoy good food for a great cause.”
In an effort to encourage participants in and around Cuyahoga and Summit counties, this year’s Friends of the Poor Walk will be held simultaneously at both St. Edward High School, 13500 Detroit Avenue in Lakewood, and at Richfield Woods Park, 4100 Broadview Road in Richfield. The family-friendly event features paved routes that are less than one mile and designed to accommodate strollers, wheelchairs and individuals of all ages and activity levels. All money raised locally will be utilized to help economically-disadvantaged residents in Northeast Ohio.
This year’s prizes include a raffle drawing for a Kindle Fire at the St. Edward High School and Richfield Woods Park locations. Additionally, St. Vincent de Paul USA will award an Apple iPod Touch 5th Generation to the registered walker who raises the most money online between August 29 and September 11. To participate or donate, register online at: fopwalk.org. For more information, contact SVDP Cleveland at 216.696.6525, ext. 3150.
Last year, the local walk raised approximately $10,000 that directly benefited the needy in our region via the Society’s charitable programs and services. The SVDP Cleveland walk is part of a national, simultaneous event, the SVDP USA Annual Friends of the Poor Walk. In 2013, the national fundraiser encompassed 232 different walks across the country -- attracting more than 22,000 walkers – and generating some $2.1 million for the poor.
The Society of St. Vincent de Paul, Diocese of Cleveland, is a local human service and welfare organization of neighborhood volunteer groups residing in participating parishes throughout the Diocese of Cleveland’s eight-county service area. Volunteers provide immediate, temporary emergency direct assistance to those in need, regardless of their race, ethnicity or religious affiliation. Last year alone, some 200,000 low-income individuals received more than $4 million in aid, which included food donations from SVDP’s six food pantries, clothing, furniture, back-to-school supplies and assistance with utilities.

Around the Corner has always been there willing to help Lakewood and westside charities. I
have to admit that Bob Evans has also stepped up big in working with local groups. Nice
to see you thanking them on the Deck, and the article in the paper.
Thanks
.

Thanks Natalie for posting and writing the article, as Jim said.
This being our first fundraiser in Lakewood, it was cool to see FOUR Lakewood establishments step up to help. St. Ed's in allowing us to hold the walk, Giant Eagle in donating water, and a (40 year) local establishment like Around the Corner sharing in their profits together with a new one in Bob Evans.
Ultimately, my hope and prayer is that we can help more people. We're feeding over 15,000 people per month as it is throughout northeast Ohio. We've started a student group at St. Ed's and hope to see us meeting more needs in Lakewood, together with the city and places like LCSC, North Coast Health and so many others.
Please consider joining us. It is free to register. You can raise money pledge-a-thon style.

Thanks for having forums like this to get the word out! I'm open to any conversations about lifting our Lakewood residents out of poverty.
