Woman Crushed By RTA Bus At Detroit Turn-A-Round

Post by Jim O'Bryan »

Around 3pm today, a call went out for an unusual accident. A woman had been run over by
an RTA Bus. While this is a terrible tale, it should be mentioned the person hit, was the
driver of the bus as well. At the Detroit turnaround, an RTA Bus driver parked her bus and
was going to take a quick break before heading back down Detroit Avenue, when she noticed
her bus was rolling. In a panic she moved in front of the bus trying to stop it, with no success.
The bus finally ran into a tree pinning the woman between the tree and the bus. When police
and fire answered the call it took nearly 20 minutes just to stabilize the driver, taking her
to Metro General Hospital, where prognosis for keeping her leg and arm seemed 25% at best.
While she is stable, and will survive, it was a terrible scene, here are a couple shots from
after the removal and stabilization.

This sounds very disturbing as we wait for the facts.

But this is a good time to remember that the RTA drivers and employees work for us just like our police, fire, refuse, water, and crossing guards to list a few categories.

They all need our daily support and respect.

Let's hope for a good recovery.

Update, after watching the video it was found the driver did nothing wrong.

She got out of her buss in Park. walked around to the button to close the boarding doors so no
one could get on while she was gone. When the doors closed the bus jumped out of park into drive.
She had no idea and thought it was rolling and panicked.

The rest is history.

NEVER GET IN FRONT OF A MOVING BUS.

I hope RTA helps this driver more than the last victim hit by an RTA bus in Lakewood...
