Ashland Observed By A Couple of Lakewood Nuts

Post by Jim O'Bryan »

This morning I had the rare pleasure of having breakfast with Matthew Markling. We used
to have breakfast more often in the past, when he was School Board President, but
his business of defending school districts, and my business interests see us both busy, and
going in opposite directions.

For those that do not know us, we a polar opposites, in damn near everything in life. So I
thought it would be good to have breakfast with him, so to hear and experience both
sides. (See Separate Stories under "The Devil Is Coming To Lakewood thread)

During that "Bob Evans" style meal at Bob Evans, we got into a discussion about traffic
lights, basketball courts, parks, and well everything. We couldn't agree on anything! So
finally I said to him, "we need this city to be more like Ashland, Ohio." I mean I love Lakewood
I have said for decades, "Same density as Los Angles, same mindset as Mayberry RFD." So
I meant hang on to that hometown feel.

He questioned why Ashland, and I mentioned, they have full basketball courts, swimming
pools opened early, parks without closing times. He laughed and mentioned, "I used to
teach at Ashland University, and I do not see it as progressive as Lakewood in many ways,
though it would seem there is enough respect for both history, residents, business, and
education to make a well balanced city, but he could not remember the basketball courts.

So, I said, let's go check it out, and we did. Here are the photos and videos of our findings.
As you can imagine, the only thing worse than driving to Ashland with Matt Markling would
be going with me. Hmmmmmmm, maybe I can convince him Obama is not Satan.

Image
Feeling full after Bob Evans, we hit I-71. Matt would be described as a capable driver. He
doesn't speed in legal terms, but he uses every mph he can.

Image
The first thing I notice in this park near the center of town, is they are a lot like Lakewood.
They even have a Chautauqua thingy going on.

Image
Within sight of their baseball field! I mean come on, our twin.

Image
We found the hoops, set up for 1 full game, 2 half court games, of 4 tight half court games.

Image
You can see the pool in the back, the courts are right on the street with residential directly
across from them.

Image
They also had a nice amphitheater to the right of the courts. Like what is being promised
by the City of Lakewood for Kauffman Park.

Image
You can see how much this would add to our premiere downtown park. I counted 2,080
seats in a layout similar to Blossom.

Image
Even the back was nice.

As we were leaving the park, we encountered a crosswalk that had markings not just like
I have never seen, but they did not even look the same corner to corner.

Image
So we stopped and checked it out.

AS you can see, the drivers there are just as confused or illegal as Lakewood drivers. I still
maintain yellow lights mean "slow/careful" red lights mean "stop" Flashing yellow as I have
always stated is just wrong.

While their Taco Bell was no better than ours, their Wendy's was HUGE...
Image

Image
This lot and building is just for overflow!

Image
At "Fur, Fin and Feather" on the way back we noticed long lines of gun safes with sold on
them then headed off to Ashland's number 3 favorite tourist attraction off I-71, Grandpas
Cheese Barn!

Image

Ashland was nice, but it was no Lakewood.

As a matter of fact Danielle, as a member of the "LO News Crew", I was able to snap 1 shot of them on the open road!

Gold

Was it you that did Ryan and Fitz as Sigfried and Roy too?

Who can forget...

You have captured the essence of talking about "things" while having fun. That even in
"serious" discussions there is room for a little humor, and some fun.

Bonus point for movie knowledge as well.

Where is that zillion like button?! Oh that is right, here we actually have to take the time to
write, "I like it" after you have taken the time to post something.

I like it.

Geeeeeeeeeeeee.....

Is it time for that banjo sing-a-long yet? :D

Nuts? No.

Acorns? Perhaps...

Whatever we have here does seem to be growing, as acorns tend to do. :D

Back to the banjo.... :D

I don't have the skills to have done that one.

I found these old pics of Ryan and Fitz though. :)

Gary

This is a thread with some Lakewood residents, that rarely see eye to eye, having fun while talking about semi important
things in a fun loving way, realizing their own self importance, and depth of conversation should never make anyone take
anyone so seriously as to "be offended."

It would seem that Lakewood suffers heavily from peer pressure, outside pressure, business pressure, social pressure, and
the fear of opening their mouths and just talking about things, even with people that may not agree.

We do not need to always be singing along, as long as we are all pulling for Lakewood.

To me, what is much more important than people agreeing with me, are people willing to stand and talk about what they think
and feel. It is funny, with the help of Bill Call, we are finding out first hand why politicians stay off the Deck. Their words and
thoughts are available even a decade later to look and see. Was the Law Director truthful when he told us, the lights at intersections
were ONLY FOR CARS IDLING? While we found out they had facial recognition software plugged into NSA. And many many
other interactions, that are recorded forever.

Yeah politicians in this town hate accountability, and the "power brokers" prefer bending sunlight every morning at Panera
Bread, or Erie Island Coffee when it is super secret. Than actually talking about their ideas and plans. I mean what if someone disagrees?
Or has a better idea? That would be terrible!!! Only in Lakewood are better ideas treated with such disdain, or so unsettling.

Open conversations are healthy.

Informal poll:

What entices/engages/excites you more about Grandpa's Cheese Barn:

a.) the cheese barn side of the venue;
b.) the candy side of the venue?

Me? a.)

I love the fact that they have both. We meet my Mom from Columbus there quite often. My kids and wife like b.) and I like a.) so we all leave happy!
