It's All Fun Until Someone Dies!

Post by Jim O'Bryan »

Between 2:30am and 3:00am a car traveling north on Cook Ave. from Detroit Ave. never
even slowed down until after he had hit a 30 something male crossing the street.

The man was pedestrian was pronounced dead, the driver was taken into custody. According
to the people I spoke with the driver seemed disorientated, and mumbling and stumbling.
He also was seen refusing a breath test at the scene.

A terrible way to start the weekend.

Be safe.

Assuming that alcohol consumption contributed to this your headline is spot on. What a tragedy.

The driver refused a breath test, and witnesses described him as disorientated.

As the city invites more and more bars, more and more patios which enlarge capacity, we better
get used to more and more stupid mistakes by those consuming.

The West Bank of the Flat was known for food and drink, until the drunks ruined it. It always seems
to happen. A place gets hip, and those without common sense ruin it.

I wonder where responsible drinking begins and ends. Did he not seem disoriented to his friends, the server etc. Should we have a breathalyzers available for patrons to use voluntarily at establishments to help convince the impaired that they are legally impaired?
It appears as though he felt the he had it under control.
I have questions and concerns but no answers. The irony of this conversation on Independence Day coupled with the loss of a life sure dampens the spirit.

The East Bank of the Flats was not killed by drunks it was killed by panhandlers and crime

Bill

The actual diagnose would be, the place got crowded with bars, as bars and new bars fought for
clientele under age drinkers seemed to be getting into clubs easier and easier. One night some
young men in their 20s tried to swim the river, one drowned the other almost drown, picked up
by boater. This was on the heels of other idiots, some underage falling in the river, swiming, etc.
So out came the 14' high fences, remember them. Older age clubs started to flicker, younger crowds
and crime, drunk kids make easy pickings.

While the stabbing and the panhandlers made things bad, it was the drunks, and greedy bar owners
that ultimately killed the east bank of the flats.

I'm surprised we don't have more events like this. We have a lot of drinking establishments and it should be evident that this leads to impaired drivers. I tell all my visitors to park in my driveway, not the street, because some of those drunks can't even see a parked car.

I would like more information on how this happened. Why was a pedestrian in the street at that hour, and why didn't he hear and see the approaching car? Too many pedestrians don't look out for themselves. Jaywalking is endemic; perhaps because many of our residential blocks are so long we won't walk to the crosswalk. But I live three houses from an intersection with a light, and I'm dismayed by how many people wander across the street by my house, with no apparent consideration of traffic. And now we have raised a generation of earbudded kids, who appear to have no connection to the real world, with its cars and trains.

Perhaps we should bite the bullet and require all cars to be equipped with an interlock that disables the ignition if the driver can't prove he is sober. It would be expensive, but not as expensive as lost lives and providing room and board for the too short time we incarcerate those drunk drivers we catch and convict.

Any idea who the people involved were, or what bar the driver left?

Deceased is: David M Nageotte, from Cook Ave. age 36

Driver's name will not be released until he is charged.

The police were called when someone reported coming upon a dead body in the street. The police
responding to the call could see that it had been an accident. The car that hit David was found farther
down Cook Ave. and the driver was found and taken into custody. He refused a breath test, and
a warrant was sought to draw blood from the individual.

More on Monday.

The driver was William Galvin, age 28, also
a resident of Cook Avenue like the victim.
He has been charged with aggravated
vehicular homicide.

More details later.
