Lakewood is Hoops Central

Post by Michael Deneen »

Just a couple years after returning our outdoor hoops (thanks to all the great folks at LOBC), Lakewood has re-emerged as a basketball town.

After its conference title run, the LHS boys team hosts a tournament game tonight at 7pm. This will likely be the final game ever played at the East Gym, since construction is likely to start on "Phase III" this summer.

The girls team (also conference champs) has won its first two tournament games, including a buzzer beater last night to beat Brunswick. They play for the district championship on Friday night.

Also, St. Ed's is ranked #1 in the area....I predict they will make the Final Four this year.

"If you build it, they will come."

"They" meaning victories, conference championships and tournament advancements in this case!

Congrats Lakewood.

The Lakewood City Schools Facebook page reports that the girls basketball team lost to Wadsworth 55-32.

But it was still a great season!

I'm not sure whether this link will work but:

The Rangers seasons have ended, but St. Ed is in the State Championship game tonight at 8:30pm on SportsTime Ohio.
They are playing Upper Arlington, which I believe is a Columbus area team.

It will be some nice exposure for the Lakewood brand....on statewide broadcasts they become "Lakewood St. Edward".

Wow, that was an amazing game.
The Eagles hit a three pointer in the closing seconds to force overtime, then won the game.

I think Lakewood can officially be declared hoops central for the season.

St. Ed won the state championship, and each of the Ranger teams won their conference.

I still attribute this success to the return of outdoor baskets!

Betting pool: which Lakewood council member puts forth the resolution honoring St Ed for winning state title?

I could never understand why our city honors st ed championships when their teams are mostly comprised of "student athletes" who are "wooed" from other schools and municipalities.

Where are the resolutions for Ranger girls and boys winning conference championships?

There's no reason that council can't recognize the Rangers' accomplishments....any member reading this thread should take the lead on that issue.

However, it's silly to think that St. Ed state titles shouldn't be recognized. The school is an important Lakewood institution, one that (unlike many others) has never threatened to shut down or leave town.

Lakewood kids are a smaller percentage of the student body than back in the 80s (when Eric Flannery and I attended), but the school does a lot to spread the Lakewood brand.

Mike,

City Council should recognize all things great with the Lakewood City Schools, but they haven't.

City Council should also recognize all things great with St. Edward, and they will.

And, to your point, St. Edward has and will continue to be a valuable educational partner in the 'Wood in the past, present, and future.

I have yet to figure out why the same folks who argue that St. Edward isn't really "Lakewood" are suddenly huge University of Akron fans.

We should celebrate all things great in the 'Wood!

It is an important Catholic institution.

Exactly what is "the Lakewood brand?"

Congratulations to the Eagles. My son, who is a sophomore there, got to go to Columbus and witness it which was great. Hopefully that success will inspire more interest in the sport here in Lakewood.
