Why is it that no school is an occasion to celebrate? Is going to school that bad?

My kids like school pretty much. Being excited about a snow day is more like finding out you get a free unexpected day of vacation. You don't have to hate your job to like an unexpected day off.
For some families it's a hardship and there are last minute scrambles to figure out who's going to watch the kids because the parents are working. In Lakewood where so many of us know each other, some families will have more kids for that day.
For those with parents who can manage it, it's a day to stay later in your pajamas, a day when mom and dad don't have to get up and make sure everyone is fed and brushed and has their lunches and gym shoes and algebra homework and violas and projects. The kids will dash outside to try to build a snowman in between breaks of hot chocolate and playing Bananagrams-- we'll get out the watercolors to paint what we see outside-- and even if we decide it's a good day to clean the basement, it will still be a special day -- a day out of time.
Snow days are as fun for me now, as a parent, as they were when I was a kid because the kids are so excited. It takes me back to when they were younger and being at home was their whole world.
Their schools are good and their teachers are competent and when they go back, they'll catch up and have wild stories to tell about the snow and what they did on their free day.
