Why Is the Lakewood Football Program Struggling?

Post by Michael Deneen »

Jim broke the news that LHS football coach Ron Lewis has resigned.

I've watched high school football for well over 30 years, and I can't figure out why the LHS program has struggled so much over the past 14 seasons.

Back in the 80s and 90s, they were one of the top programs in the Cleveland area, an annual contender in the tough Lake Erie League.

They have had numerous losing seasons since 2000, despite recently moving to a conference that has much smaller schools.

I can't figure out the problem....does anyone have thoughts?

We are "newer" to Lakewood (moved here in 1999) so can't say about the glory years, but my assumption has been that if you were in Lakewood School District boundaries and an exceptional football player, than you would go to St. Edwards or St. Ignatius. Alex Boone would be one recent example that I can think of off the top of my head.

This might be over-simplistic, but that's one reason I can think of for the lack of a good team here.

I know this will draw much ill will, but I always thought our glory days of football were much
like the glory days of the cardiac kids. We merely lost by smaller scores.

With all of this common core stuff going on, it does trouble me that there is any extra
energy from the schools for worrying about Lakewood students not leaving enough of their
body parts on the "field of glory."

Let's work on academics.
